Task description
Under the direct guidance of the UNLIREC Programme Coordinator and under the supervision of the Political Affairs Officer (UNLIREC) and the UNODA #Youth4Disarmament Initiative Lead, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

 Implementing UNLIREC’s Youth-focused initiatives (75%)
Organizes training activities and provides mentorship and guidance to UNLIREC’s youth-focused initiatives, including to the regional cohort of the UN Youth Champions for Disarmament project located in Latin America and the Caribbean, as part of UNODA´s Youth4Disarmament Initiative; and the Spanish speaking Regional Youth and Disarmament Training Programme. This includes:
• Implements the roll out of the UN Youth Champions for Disarmament project and the Spanish speaking Regional Youth and Disarmament Training Programme in the region, which includes the development and dissemination of the call for applications for the project and the assistance with the shortlisting of candidates, as well as the production of social media assets.
• Supports the development of training curriculum and organizes a series of virtual trainings/webinars, in cooperation with the three Regional Centres of UNODA.
• Supports organization of regional in-person workshops with the youth cohorts selected from the Latin America and the Caribbean region.
• Provides continuous mentoring and guidance to youth throughout the duration of the programmes, including guidance on youth-led initiatives at the local levels.
• Supports the organization of a youth forum in New York to present the regional aspects of the youth initiatives.
• Undertakes media-monitoring and thematic research to compile baseline information for new and existing programming areas.
• Supports outreach and communication campaigns to disseminate outcomes of the initiatives.

 Drafting reports, briefing materials and other related documents (10%)
• Contributes to the preparation of briefing materials, background documents, talking points, graphs and correspondence, etc. related to project implementation and relevant reports (donor reports, mission reports and after-action reports, etc.).
• Supports UNLIREC’s work on firearms in schools by, among others, providing inputs to the development and delivery of education material in schools to the States in the region.
• Supports the creation and/or updating of communication material and tools relating to the projects.
• Contributes to the preparation of narrative reports.
• Helps to maintain statistics and other data for dissemination to UN and national author-ities in the Latin American and Caribbean Region.

 Supporting the Building and Maintaining of Partnerships (10%)
• Helps to maintain contacts with project focal points, other sectors of the UN, and other organizations/partners on coordination matters.
• Assists in mobilizing youth volunteer networks and partnerships to undertake arms control and disarmament campaigns.
• Supports planning, logistics and implementation of missions and activities (virtual or face-to-face) in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean within assigned projects which foster partnerships. Attends meetings and takes notes as required.

 Performing other related duties as required by the Director, Deputy-Director and/or Programme Coordinators (5%)

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
• Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
• Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
• Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
• Contribute with articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
• Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers;
• Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Results/Expected Outputs
• Youth engagement on arms control and disarmament has been revitalized and expanded in Latin America and the Caribbean and is conducted in a sustainable manner through long-term programming (rather than individual activities).
• Visible youth leader engagement from Latin America and the Caribbean has significantly increased at global, regional, national and local levels.
• UNLIREC has consolidated its role as a go-to-partner on youth disarmament and arms control matters in the region, and at the global levels, with a dedicated resource person as a focal point.

The UNV is additionally expected to:
• Consistently apply appropriate UN policies, guidelines and procedures.
• Provide sound research assistance.
• Improve organization and delivery of project activities;
• Develop capacities through coaching, mentoring, and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-) governmental counterparts, including Implementing Partners (Ips);
• Systematically apply, integrate and document Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspectives, in all activities throughout the assignment;
• Provide a final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

18 – 26

Nationality
Candidate must be a national of a country other than the country of assignment.

Requirements
Required experience
1 years of experience in supporting programme implementation, advocacy, capacity development; working with youth on social sciences, development and/or peace and security is required.
• Experience in designing and implementing/facilitating workshops and/or capacity development exercises, including peer-to-peer education and targeting youth audiences is required.
• Experience and knowledge on meaningful youth engagement, including in the context of the Youth, Peace and Security agenda; understanding of disarmament, arms control and/or non-proliferation issues would be an asset.
• Prior experience engaging with local, regional and/or national government or authorities, as well as UN agencies; and familiarity with ODA’s work and mandate would be an asset.
• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded.
