RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Youth Higher Education Intern will be responsible for supporting all HLN program activities including Higher Education workshops and 1:1 student support. Interns will be expected to work 1:1 or with small groups of students to coach them on post-secondary opportunities, guide them through FAFSA/CADAA submissions, support with scholarship applications and college applications and enrollment. Interns will additionally assist Youth Program Department staff with student outreach, program development, program implementation, administration, and other tasks as needed. Interns will learn how to facilitate programming in a trauma informed, culturally responsive manner; and learn how to cultivate an equitable, welcoming environment. 


  • Interns will learn basic college advising skills including how to help students navigate the higher education system and FAFSA/CADAA application to ensure their success in post-secondary education. 
  • Intern will be able to provide basic program management support including but not limited to outreach and recruitment, intake, data entry, editing college essays, tracking student application progress, helping students navigate the FAFSA/CADAA applications, lesson planning and group program facilitation.
  • Interns will be able to provide academic/college support tailored to the needs of English Language Learners. 
  • Intern will learn best practices for collaboration with school staff, administrators, and community members to ensure a supportive network for students.
  • Interns will learn how to coordinate engaging, skill-building activities for high school students using trauma-informed and culturally/linguistically responsive practices.
  • Intern will gain insight on various refugee and immigrant issues,and support the systems that enable them to thrive.


  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate or certificate program
  • Must be living in San Diego, CA, and comfortable working in person.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have availability Monday – Friday between the hours of 2 pm and 6 pm at least twice per week for in person work. Schedule will vary by program site.
  • Must have basic knowledge of the FAFSA or CADAA application process and post-secondary education options. 
  • Must have English Language fluency to edit essays, correct grammar and punctuation, and help students develop their ideas.
  • Experience working with youth, refugees and/or English Language Learners ages 14-24 a plus.  
  • Experience working in a diverse, multicultural setting a plus. 
  • Able to commit 10-20 hours per week through June 2023
  • Bilingual or multilingual strongly preferred in Pashto, Farsi/Dari, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Haitian Creole, or other common refugee language.
