Context
As part of the Project ” Strengthening assistance, promotion and protection of the rights of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in Nouakchott and Nouadhibou “, funded by the Delegation of the European Union and jointly implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to address protection and assistance needs related to disembarkations in Mauritania; IOM is recruiting a Protection and Operations Assistant (Disembarkations) in Nouakchott.
Responsibilities
- Carry out vulnerability assessment, assistance and referral interviews for migrants taken into care during disembarkation operations, using the screening tools developed
- Assist in identifying options for assistance, protection and referral of cases to appropriate services and escalate complex cases to the National Project Manager (Protection) and/or the Protection Officer;
- Record assisted and/or referred cases in the database, in accordance with IOM internal procedures
- Provide ongoing technical and thematic support to IOM partners, including INLCTPTM, operating at disembarkation points during migrant care operations
- Assist in coordinating the care of migrants with other humanitarian and protection actors working on the ground during disembarkation operations;
- Support in the reception, vulnerability assessment, identification of assistance needs and referral of other cases requiring IOM assistance
- Support AVRR activities, including vulnerability and eligibility assessment, departure/reception movement operations and consular liaison for documentation
- Assist in the preparation of periodic activity reports
- Collect, record and analyze data relating to landing activities, ensuring their quality, confidentiality and compliance with data protection principles and IOM internal procedures
- Any other tasks identified and assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Project Management, Law, International Relations, Political Science and/or related fields, with 02 years of relevant experience, or High School Diploma with four years of relevant experience
Experience
- Proven experience in the protection and vulnerability assessment of people on the move
- Proven experience in the field of social protection and/or the protection of people in vulnerable situations
- Knowledge of vulnerability screening and identification techniques
- Knowledge of issues related to migration in general, migration dynamics in Mauritania and the actors involved
- Ability to work with government partners and national and international organizations
- Ability to work in emergency contexts (night and recurring landings, mass influxes)
Good command of MS-Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and the KOBO tool
Languages
Perfect command of French is required.
Knowledge of English and Arabic is a strong asset
Knowledge of local or regional languages spoken by migrants is an asset
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
