Tasks of UN jobs in Geneva – Climate Mitigation & Banking Lead:
Climate Mitigation Journey
- To design and design an end-to-end climate mitigation journey and engage with relevant parties to populate that internally and externally
- Output: deck with a bank’s climate mitigation journey outlining all the various steps banks need to take in respect of their decarbonization strategies and available guidance / resources plus considerations for regional approaches
- Implementation to be measured by the quality of the produced materials and the adoption of the level of adoption of the climate mitigation journey internally and externally
Guidance for banks on Transition Strategies / Target Operating Model
- To design and develop new advice sectoral transition strategies and the operationalization of net zero for signatories of the Principles of Responsible Banking and / or members of the Net Zero Banking Alliance
- Output: one direction document to be published on sectoral transition strategies and one guidance to be published on the operationalization of net zero
- Implementation to be measured by the quality of the produced materials and their evaluation by participant banks
Capacity-Building
- To design and deliver capacity-building sessions across regions on climate mitigation topics for banks that are looking to design their climate targets and / or transition strategies
- Output: training sessions for each region in line with the agreed Q3/Q4 plan
- Implementation to be measured by the quality of the produced materials and the engagement and evaluation of participant banks
The consultant will set up and lead the Net Zero Banking workstream to complete the following tasks:
Climate Mitigation Journey
- Plan and develop a bank’s end-to-end climate mitigation journey
- Engage with UNEP FI teams to settle the climate mitigation journey internally
- Engage with regional coordination offices to populate the climate mitigation journey in regions
- Map functional guidance/resources against the climate mitigation journey
- Recognize gaps in existing guidance / resources and build plan to address those
- Provide aid to signatories of the Principles of Responsible Banking and/or members of the Net Zero Banking Alliance that are looking to define or implement their climate mitigation approach
Guidance for banks on Transition Strategies / Target Operating Model
- Define the scope boundaries for the growth of guidance / resources
- Conscript two junior consultants to support with the development of guidance / resources
- Run meetings, desktop research and interviews to design and develop guidance / resources on sectoral transition strategies for banks
- Run meetings, desktop research and interviews to design and develop guidance / resources on the operationalization of net zero for banks
- Engage with UNEP FI teams and regional coordination offices to populate the guidance / resources in regions
- Provide help to signatories of the Principles of Responsible Banking and/or members of the Net Zero Banking Alliance that are looking to define their transition strategies and approach towards the operationalization of net zero
Capacity-Building
- Engage with regional coordination offices to coordinate on Q3/Q4 plan for capacity-building on climate mitigation
- Develop capacity-building materials
- Deliver capacity-building sessions on climate mitigation across regions, in line with agreed Q3/Q4 plan
- Provide help to signatories of the Principles of Responsible Banking and/or members of the Net Zero Banking Alliance that are looking to design their climate targets and / or transition strategies
The advisor shall be under the overall supervision of the Head of UNEP FI and report to the Head of Climate Change, working in close coordination with UNEP FI’s internal teams and regional coordination offices.

Qualifications of UN jobs in Geneva – Climate Mitigation & Banking Lead:
Education:
An Advanced University degree or comparable experience in finance, banking, economic development, sustainable finance, climate finance, climate technologies, sustainable development or a related field. A First degree could be taken in lieu of an advanced degree provided the selected candidate has 12 years of appropriate experience.
Professional Background:
At least a combined (10) ten years of working background with financial institutions, sustainable finance and/or in capacity building/training.
Skills & Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge about commercial banks, environmental and social sustainability issues, international sustainable finance frameworks. Skills and experience in climate mitigation targets and developing and delivering technical support, ideally with banks or with other FSI entities. Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders (such as NGOs, international and domestic organizations, authorities) to foster partnerships in target countries. Experience in content development, project preparation and growth.
Languages
Languages: English is the working language of UNEP FI. Understanding of other United Nations languages is an asset.
