About UN Jobs in Yemen-Consultant
The Cluster Office for Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen is the UNESCO Gulf States and Yemen Office. The UNESCO Gulf States and Yemen Office is based in Doha, Qatar, and provides assistance to its Member States in the areas of education, social and human sciences, culture, communication, and the natural sciences.
The UNESCO Office in Doha is concentrating its efforts on promoting Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) and scientific cooperation, natural resource management, and biodiversity protection, as well as addressing water security, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and climate change, within the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and UNESCO’s Medium-Term Strategy (2022-2029).
The initiative “Building Climate-resilient Communities in Historic Cities in Yemen through Strengthened Disaster Risk Management and Awareness” was introduced by the UNESCO Office in Doha in 2023. The project’s overarching goal is to make sure that communities, families, and incomes in two historically significant towns in Yemen that are prone to disasters are better secured, ready, and informed about disaster risk reduction measures.
In order to achieve this, UNESCO will urgently assist local government officials and vulnerable communities in the Old City of Sana’a and the Old Walled City of Shibam by establishing an early warning system in the Old Walled City of Shibam, enhancing the early warning system that is currently in place in the Old City of Sana’a, raising the communities’ awareness of disaster risk reduction, and starting the preparation phase for the establishment of a Flood Risk Management Info.
In order to lay the groundwork and create a strong foundation for the development of a Flood Risk Management Information System (MIS), UNESCO is looking for a MIS expert to carry out a feasibility study. This study will (i) provide a better understanding of the availability of data and information required for the development of the MIS, as well as (ii) map stakeholders/beneficiaries and identify gaps, needs, and priorities for capacity development.
