Handicap International (HI) is an independent and impartial organization that works in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict, and disaster. It was founded in 1982 by two young doctors who were outraged by the injustice faced by victims of conflict. HI works alongside people with disabilities and individuals living in situations of poverty and exclusion, conflict, and disaster. The organization is made up of a Federation, eight national associations, and the HI Institute on Humanitarian Action. The Federation is responsible for implementing the network’s social missions in around sixty countries. The national associations are known as “Handicap International” in continental Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, and Switzerland) and “Humanity & Inclusion” in Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Each association has its own board of trustees. In January 2018, the global Handicap International network became Humanity & Inclusion. The organization’s new name is based on the affirmation of a value that is central to the organization, that of humanity. HI’s mission is to improve the living conditions and autonomy of people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. The organization works in over sixty countries and provides services such as physical rehabilitation, social inclusion, and economic empowerment. HI also advocates for the rights of people with disabilities and other vulnerable populations.
