United Nations personnel may be exposed to various health risks. The Laboratory Technician could mitigate these risks by providing better health services to personnel and their dependents.

The Laboratory Technician of the United Nations Clinic carries out his duties under the direct supervision of the Chief Medical Officer of the United Nations Clinic.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Management of the United Nations Clinic laboratory to ensure efficient operation of daily functions;
  • Regular maintenance of all laboratory equipment according to manufacturers’ technical specifications;
  • The rapid and effective resolution of all problems related to the performance of the laboratory;
  • Proper reporting of problems to the equipment supplier’s after-sales service;
  • Efficient communication and coordination with the maintenance technician and timely facilitation of on-site service are required;
  • Ensure the protection of the handling of biohazardous materials in accordance with international standards;
  • Collect blood samples while applying infection prevention measures and international biosafety standards;
  • Collect and label urine and sputum drops for various tests in accordance with international biological safety standards;
  • Perform all laboratory tests as requested by the Clinic Physicians in a prompt and professional manner;
  • Sterilize instruments and containers according to biological safety standards;
  • Contribute to the organization and implementation of health promotion and monitoring programs;
  • Carry out diagnosis and laboratory tests using available equipment and instruments;
  • Transmit test results to Physicians in a timely manner;
  • Ensure confidential management of laboratory analysis reports;
  • Ensure the disposal of biomedical waste according to international biosafety standards in coordination with Doctors and Nurses.

Administrative tasks:

  • Ensure proper management of reagent reserves; keep an inventory of laboratory supplies and ensure that supplies are always replenished and adequate;
  • Arrange for off-site testing for UN personnel upon request; 
  • Keep records of all work done in the laboratory and provide a statistical report on laboratory activities.

Skills

  • Ability to use objective problem analysis and judgment to understand how interdependent elements coexist within an overall process or system, and to consider how changing one element may impact other parts of the system;
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and unambiguously through both written and verbal communication; adapt messages and choose communication methods according to the audience;
  • Ensure compliance of programme activities with the ethical rules and principles of the United Nations, by guaranteeing transparent and efficient management of the financial and human resources mobilized;
  • Know how to position the Organization’s brand image and maintain its quality.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Diploma in Medical Laboratory required.

Experience:

  • Minimum three (03) years of experience as a Laboratory Technician.
  • Proven experience as a Laboratory Technician;
  • Proficiency in IT tools and common software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint);
  • Knowledge of United Nations administrative procedures would be an asset;
  • Be able to work in a team in a multicultural environment;
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, communication and writing skills.
  • Have mastery of French;
  • Working knowledge of English would be desirable.
