The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) is a regional commission of the United Nations that is based in Beirut, Lebanon. The organization was established in 1973 and works to support economic and social development in its 18 member states, which include Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. UNESCWA’s mission is to promote inclusive and sustainable development, gender equality, and social justice in the region. The organization works on a range of issues, including poverty reduction, employment, education, health, environment, energy, and human rights. UNESCWA provides technical assistance, conducts research and analysis, and facilitates regional cooperation and dialogue to support its member states in achieving their development goals.
