Responsibilities
Background The UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is the United Nations agency responsible for urbanization and human settlements, mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat helps the urban poor by transforming cities into safer and healthier places with better opportunities. It works with organizations at every level, including all spheres of government, civil society, private sector and the Habitat Agenda Partners. The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies toward the effective delivery of UN-Habitat’s mandate and Strategic Plan. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports the capacity development of Member States and partners. The Programme Development Branch (PDB) is responsible for the overall coordination of programme development. It brings together normative and operational expertise supporting high-quality integrated programmes that maximize results across the outcomes and the Domains of Change in the Strategic Plan. It builds on the concrete demands of national and local governments, strengthening the capacity of government and urban stakeholders at all levels to address the social, economic, environmental, and crisis dimensions of sustainable urbanization. The Branch also focuses on supporting global programme development to strengthen normative capacity and knowledge generation to increase impact and influence, through strategic partnerships. The Capacity Development and Training Unit (CDTU) is responsible for supporting and monitoring the implementation of UN-Habitat’s Capacity Building strategy. Individuals and institutions responsible for making cities sustainable and safe places to live and work in dignity need to have the skills, competencies and tools to steer cities towards a path of sustainable and inclusive urbanization. Capacity building addresses these needs, helping city leaders and institutions to accelerate toward the global goals of sustainable urban development. CDTU delivers a wide range of strategies, trainings, and technical support for the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. This includes transforming knowledge into capacity-building products, including practical and problem-solving tools that respond to the needs of governments, cities, partners, technical cadres, urban practitioners, and policy makers alike, as well as carrying out capacity needs assessments. CDTU’s mandates includes to manage UN-Habitat Learn, UN-Habitat’s online learning platform; support training development across UN-Habitat, such as the SDG Cities Programme; and direct management of projects, such as the Global Urban Lectures (GUL). Duties and Responsibilities In this assignment, the individual contractor will support the projects and activities of the Capacity Development and Training Unit primarily through the recording and post-production of different videos and animations, guided and overseen by CDTU staff and the overall supervision of the CDTU oic Head of Unit. This includes collaborating with the team and external partners in the overall process of the video production based on the brief provided by each assignment. The individual contractor will be involved in the following typical main duties: • Record high-quality video footage (both with a green screen and real background) such as lectures and interviews with experts, using self-owned recording equipment; • Develop scripts for videos and animations; • Provide guidance on framing and composition to achieve desired visual outcomes for different video recordings; • Manage post-production tasks such as editing videos including by ensuring quality audio, adding transitions, creating and adding graphics, and integrating subtitles; • Produce explanatory animations to complement the recordings, as required by each assigned project; • Design and develop 2D and/or 3D animations to support e-learning and outreach materials; • Undertake a few review rounds during video production process by collecting and incorporating feedback from the CDTU team and relevant external partners; • Any other tasks as discussed and agreed with relevant Programme Managers in the Unit. Format: Decisions on the usage of specific styles should be made in line with the corporate and project’s branding guidelines and in liaison with UN-Habitat’s Capacity Development & Training Unit.
Qualifications/special skills
A high school diploma is required. The years of experience will be reduced by 2 for candidates who possess a bachelor’s degree in film production, digital media, design or related field. 1. A minimum of 3 years relevant professional experience in film production, digital media, design or graphics required. 2. Demonstrated experience of successfully completed video and animation work for a variety of clients required. 3. Proven experience working for specific target audiences from start to end and to deliver concrete products based on tight timelines is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this consultancy, fluency in oral and written English is required.
