The United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) manages and implements the United Nations programme on the peaceful uses of outer space and supports UNOV/UNODC with various operational services. As part of the United Nations Office at Vienna, the Information Technology Service (ITS) through its India Technology Hub (ITH) forms part of the ITS’s vital delivery pillars in keeping with the UN’s revised ICT strategy and is responsible for Information Technology Support, focusing on innovative, sustainable, affordable and robust digital solutions, cybersecurity measures and trainings to meet UNOV/UNODC requirements, also enabling availability of the solutions more generally across the UN Secretariat entities and beyond.

Context:

As part of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV), the Information Technology Service (ITS) through its India Technology Hub (ITH) forms part of the ITS’s vital delivery pillars in keeping with the UN’s revised ICT strategy and is responsible for Information Technology Support, focusing on innovative, sustainable, affordable and robust digital solutions, cybersecurity measures and trainings to meet UNOV/UNODC requirements, also enabling availability of the solutions more generally across the UN Secretariat entities and beyond. This assignment aims to help software developer to understand the practical aspects of coding, debugging, documentation, and collaboration in a professional software development environment. It will also provide opportunities to apply your learning under the guidance of experienced developers.

Task description:

The ITH based in New Delhi forms part of the vital delivery pillars of the ITS in keeping with the UN’s revised ICT strategy. As part of this strategy and under the direct supervision of the Head – India Technology Hub and will be responsible for the following tasks: 1. Assist in Coding and Development: • Write, test, and debug code under the supervision of senior developers. • Contribute to ongoing development tasks and feature enhancements. 2. Bug Fixing: • Identify and fix bugs in existing codebases. • Participate in troubleshooting and resolving issues. 3. Documentation: • Document code, processes, and project updates. • Maintain technical documentation for internal use. 4. Code Reviews: • Participate in peer reviews to understand coding standards and best practices. • Learn to provide and receive constructive feedback.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related field.

Skills and experience

• Experience in Web development, AI/ML, full stack development, App development • Sound knowledge of Python, Java, JavaScript, C++ etc • Familiarity with object-oriented programming (OOP) concepts. • Frameworks like React.JS, React Native, Angular, Laravel, Nodejs, Express, Next.JS

New Delhi, as a duty station, presents a dynamic and diverse environment. The living conditions in this vibrant metropolis offer a mix of cultural richness, historical significance, and modern ameni-ties. The city provides various housing options, catering to different preferences and needs. New Delhi’s cosmopolitan atmosphere allows for easy integration into its multicultural society. While the city boasts a range of international schools, medical facilities, and recreational opportunities, it is essential to be mindful of factors such as air quality and traffic congestion. Flexibility is crucial, along with the ability and willingness to navigate challenging conditions, potentially involving physical hardships and limited comfort. Additionally, due diligence is essential, especially when it comes to being cautious with street food and water. As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials. This position is based in New Delhi. National UN Volunteers are part of the malicious insurance plan. National UN Volunteers are expected to be culturally sensitive and adjust to the prevailing culture and traditions. The contract lasts for the period indicated above with possibility of extensions subject to availability of funding, operational necessity and satisfactory performance. However, there is no expectation of renewal of the assignment. This assignment is part of the special programme initiative. As per the UN Volunteer Conditions of Service, Section XVIII, the Conditions for this assignment are amended as follows: – The UN Volunteer is not eligible for assignment travel and relocation travel costs – Access to UNV learning will be restricted to mandatory courses and free-of-charge learning resources provided by UNV.
