II. Background and Organizational Context
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has been present in the Republic of Congo since October 23, 1976. To strengthen the administration-Operations support section of the office in order to respond to the numerous requests from its team, UNDP Congo has opened a position of Driver-mechanic, Grade GS2/ICS2.
III. Position Purpose
The Driver-Mechanic ensures the driving of customers to the requested destinations by ensuring the safety of passengers during their travels, the transport of envelopes, documents, packages within the allotted timeframes, and the daily maintenance of vehicles.
IV. Main tasks and responsibilities
Under the general supervision of the Administration and Finance Manager, and under the direct supervision of the Logistics Assistant, the driver-mechanic is responsible for providing reliable and safe driving services for the office, while demonstrating great discretion, integrity and sense of responsibility, good knowledge of protocol principles and security issues.
1- Ensure good driving of vehicles by placing emphasis on the following results:
- Drive assigned official vehicle, collect and distribute mail, documents and other items;
- Carry out certain errands with local authorities and banks,
- Ensure the reception of official visitors (Consultants and Experts on mission) at the airport, and ensure their travel as part of their missions;
2- Maintain the vehicle in good condition with emphasis on the following results:
- Ensure daily maintenance of the vehicle in his charge, check the oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, etc.…
- Record official trips, daily mileage, fuel consumption, in the Log-Book and keep the vehicle’s technical sheet up to date (the dates of technical inspection and insurance renewal); guarantor of the presence of the essential kit and spare parts on board the vehicle;
- Carry out small repairs in the event of a breakdown, make all arrangements for major repairs and ensure that the vehicle entrusted to him is kept clean;
3- Ensure good vehicle performance by placing emphasis on the following results:
- Ensure cost reductions through appropriate vehicle use through maintenance, daily logbook keeping and other useful arrangements;
4- Carry out other various tasks with an emphasis on the following results:
- Support the Administration in the certification of garage invoices as well as in the formulation of complaints relating to services deemed insufficient by the garage;
- Carry out any related task requested by their hierarchical superiors as part of the Office’s activities.
V. Required skills
Formation
- Secondary education level with practical experience in automobile mechanics
- Valid driving license required
- Good knowledge of driving rules
Experience, knowledge and skills
- Three (3) years of professional experience as a driver in a public, private, NGO, Project or United Nations agency;
- Fluency in French in all aspects (oral and written) is required;
- Working knowledge of English would be highly appreciated;
- Perfect command of local languages;
- Professional experience in the United Nations system will be considered an asset;
- Have the ability to work in a multicultural environment;
- Be able to work under stress in unstable situations
- Be able to carry out small repairs and supervise major repairs in approved garages
- Know how to handle confidential and sensitive matters responsibly;
