Mission and objectives
The General Assembly mandated UNREC to provide, upon request, substantial support to the initiatives and other efforts of Member States in the African region towards the implementation of peace measures, arms limitation and disarmament in the region. UNREC was also tasked with cooperating with the African Union and coordinating the implementation of regional activities in Africa for peace, arms limitation and disarmament.
Context
UNREC was established as part of the United Nations secretariat on July 1, 1986 and is an integral part of the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, with its headquarters in Lomé, Togo. UNREC is located within the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (ODA), in the Regional Disarmament Branch, and extends its scope across Africa. The Regional Disarmament Service exercises the responsibilities of the ODA at the regional level and from a regional perspective. There are two other regional centers for disarmament around the world, in Lima, Peru, for Latin America and the Caribbean and in Kathmandu, Nepal, for Asia and the Pacific. UNREC is the only regional United Nations entity specializing in disarmament and non-proliferation in the African region. Its main function is to assist Member States in translating into action decisions, instruments and commitments in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation, at the national, subregional and regional levels. Due to its location in Africa, UNREC particularly studies the interconnection between the themes of security, disarmament and development. The Center provides support to African Member States and inter-governmental organizations by strengthening their capacities and providing them with the technical, legal and material assistance necessary to achieve lasting peace and security.
