Mission and objectives

Surfrider Foundation Europe is an environmental not-for-profit organisation which “aims at defending, saving, promoting and managing in a sustainable manner the ocean, the coastline, waves and the people who enjoy them”. Throughout its existence it has acquired strong environment skills and developed real expertise in environmental education. Having now gained recognition at European and international level, Surfrider has also become a key player in European influential networks on such matters.

Surfrider Foundation Europe’s European network of grassroots chapters and affiliates, volunteer to protect and preserve coastal resources. Chapters mobilize the public on issues that affect their communities through direct action organizing that result in real, immediate and concrete improvements in the coastal environment.

Context
With the Blue Up 2024! Campaign, Surfrider Europe, together with 35 Ocean organisations from the civil society across Europe, is pushing for Ocean protection to be high on the agenda of candidates running for the European elections that will happen in June 2024.

As part of this effort, we want to reach out to candidates to push our demands for a healthy and protected ocean. For this to happen, we need to know who is running for the elections (the heads of the lists of each party) and when possible what they are pushing for which relates or has an impact on the ocean, at party- or individual-level. We would like to facilitate this information before the elections take place so that our Ocean community are informed voters.

We’ve put together an excel to gather this information. This excel compiles for each EU country the political parties – some might be missing- (except far right) that are in place, their contacts, their websites, the names of their top candidates, the lists of all candidates, the programmes they defend.

But a lot of this information is missing and we need the help of volunteers to make sure this excel is complete as much as possible so to ease our contacts with the most relevant people ahead of the EU elections and to be able to share with our community what the different parties are committing to do ocean-wise, before the elections happen so when going to vote, they make an informed choice.

Task description
1. Check in the excel table if all running political parties (except far-right) in Germany are listed, if not add in the excel table

2. Complete all the information per party. If you have limited time, please only pick one political party. If you have more time, please consider investigating several political parties.

3. When you commit to doing this research and while you’re doing it, please mention your name in the dedicated column in the excel so not to duplicate work and to allow another person to pick another political party to be investigated.

Please note: If you are not familiar with excel and prefer to send us the information you found in a word document, this is also possible.

Requirements
Required experience
We are looking in priority for German-speaking volunteers interested in doing online research given the priority target countries of the Blue Up campaign are France, Germany, Spain and Portugal. But information from other EU countries, in particular Belgium, Bulgaria and the Netherlands is welcomed! No experience is required. Interest in the upcoming European elections/public affairs/politics is welcomed but not a pre-requisite.
