SCOPE OF WORK: The Economic Empowerment Intern is an intern position to support IRC-LA’s financial education program. This program aims to increase participants’ financial literacy, and provide them with financial coaching and access to low-interest loans. This program aims to empower participants and boost their confidence in handling their personal finances. The Economic Empowerment Intern will support the program by providing financial coaching and counseling services to program participants, while also coordinating monthly financial education workshops for all IRC clients. The intern will also engage in outreach to external organizations as well as putting together loan packages for clients.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
:  

  • Expertise in financial literacy education.
  • Experience with grant reporting and demonstrating qualitative/quantitative success of programs to funders.
  • Insight into the economic and cultural hurdles faced by refugees, asylum seekers, and other community members.
  • Fluency in engaging with clients in both a coaching and counseling role. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provide 1:1 financial coaching and counseling, including creating a personal budget, establishing a bank account, taking out loans, and establishing credit, as well as advanced asset-building topics, including analyzing credit reports and co-creating effective debt management plans.
  • Assess client needs and develop individual financial action plans with each client.
  • Provide credit and car purchase workshops to potential loan applicants.
  • Assist with client data entry, outreach for economic empowerment programs, resource management, and follow-up calls to collect quantitative data for clients. 


Qualifications

  • Available to meet in person at our Los Angeles office in Glendale on either Wednesday or Thursday.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well with people of varied backgrounds; High level of comfort, functioning and effectiveness in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Fluency in English is required. Proficiency in a refugee language strongly preferred (esp. Spanish, Ukrainian, Arabic, Dari, Farsi).
  • Educational background in social work or equivalent work experience serving low-to-moderate income immigrant populations (including refugees, asylum seekers, etc.) and/or teaching financial literacy preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, be a self-starter, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to make presentations.
  • IRC orientation and full background check (Live Scan & HireRight) are required.
  • Engaged in learning about the broader IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.
  • Willing to adhere to IRC intern and workplace policies.
