SCOPE OF WORK: The Employment  & VESL Intern will support the IRC-LA Integration Team with various aspects of ESL, job readiness support, and digital literacy training. Duties include but are not limited to assisting IRC staff with English language instruction, growing the employer network, assisting clients with workforce development, resume-building, completing new hire paperwork, and helping them learn biking or public transportation routes to and from work. All activities will be done in coordination with the IRC-LA office staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting with English language instruction and facilitation.
  • Assist with job readiness support and digital literacy training.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with employers in the community.
  • Support refugee families as they work towards self-sufficiency by assisting in the job search, resume-building, and interview process.
  • Assist with scheduling interviews and completing new hire paperwork.
  • Conduct public transportation training in relation to locations such as place of work, the IRC-LA office, and job service agencies/fairs.

Qualifications

  • Able to commit at least 16 hours per week for the duration of 4-6 months:
  • Availability on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Must be available in person on Wednesdays.
  • Available to support our virtual classes on one or more days between Monday-Friday from 5-7 pm.
  • Must be culturally sensitive, respectful of diverse backgrounds, and willing to work with English language learners; previous cross-cultural communication experience is a plus.
  • IRC orientation and background check (HireRight) required.
  • Educational background in social work or equivalent work experience serving low-to-moderate income immigrant populations (including refugees, asylum seekers, etc.) preferred.
  • Flexibility, patience, and willingness to learn/perform reasonable duties as needed.
  • Engaged in learning about the IRC mission, philosophy, global work, and local efforts.
  • Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer/Intern and workplace policies.
