Details
Mission and objectives
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, established in December 1991 by General Assembly resolution 46/182. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Joint Unit, also known as UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU), is housed within OCHA’s Emergency Response Section in Geneva. Founded in 1994, it helps Member States prepare for and respond to environmental emergencies. The Unit responds as one UN to the environmental dimensions of emergencies. It pairs UN Environment’s environmental expertise with the OCHA-coordinated humanitarian networks. By coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners, the JEU assists countries affected by disasters and crises and works to enhance the environmental sustainability of humanitarian action. Currently, the JEU is soon to turn 30 years old and there are several graphic design needs associated with the creation of logos for this anniversary as well as the update of old logos, files and templates that requiere changes. The current team in Geneva is providing its full capacity and the support with graphic design is necessary.

As the main knowledge hub, the Environmental Emergencies Centre (EEC) (https://www.eecentre.org/) delivers on JEU’s mandate to assist disaster and conflict-affected countries and UN partners, including humanitarian actors, with services and expertise in assessing environmental risks. The EEC strengthens the preparedness capacities of national responders and humanitarians for environmental emergencies by providing users with a one-stop-shop of all information relevant to the preparedness, prevention and response stages of an environmental emergency. The EEC also features a separate learning Moodle platform, with five online courses developed using Articulate in multiple languages and a separate NEAT+ tool that is a rapid and simple project-level environmental screening tool.

As part of its work on environment and humanitarian action, the JEU coordinates the Environment and Humanitarian Action Network (EHAN), working to strengthen the sustainability of humanitarian action. To this end, Environment and Humanitarian Action (EHA) Connect (https://ehaconnect.org) was developed as a knowledge hub disseminating tools and guidance for environmental mainstreaming into humanitarian relief and recovery. Launched in 2018, EHA Connect allows environmental actors to get involved in the disaster management space and humanitarian actors to mainstream environmental considerations in preparedness, response and recovery. EHA Connect includes the possibility of personalized content using a login feature and it also features the Virtual Environmental and Humanitarian Adviser (VEHA) tool that complements both humanitarian and environmental assessment tools with guidance and advice used throughout the entire Humanitarian Programme Cycle.
