Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Data Visualization and Information Systems Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Participates in the development, programming, testing, debugging and implementation of new application systems releases, modules and functionalities with a focus on enhancing data visualization capabilities and analysis. • Develops, tests and implements simple computer application systems and programs using UN established standards giving special attention to optimizing data visualization components. • Serves as team member in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation, creation and support of data visualization systems and products (reports, news, social media etc.); independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements. • Designs and develops visualizations and data stories from raw data, aggregated data, insight data, and machine learning model data. • Delivers a wide variety of data visualization tools, video and data analysis, data driven dashboards, interactive annual reports, and customizes data visualization tools as required. • Prepares technical and best practices for users, as well as training materials and conducts training sessions on visual data representation. • Maintains functional specifications for data visualization tools, programs and procedures developed and/or modified. • Creates, maintains and enhances web content management systems (CMS) focusing on user interface and experience (UX/UI). • Creates and provides support for computer application systems including version management, and deployment to users; performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to users requests. • Drafts communications, including work plan revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of reports. • Serves as focal point for coordination, monitoring and expedition of data visualization and related systems, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units to initiate requests; prepares standard terms of reference; resolves issues related to project implementation, e.g. organization of and participation in training,. • Keeps abreast of developments in the field; performs benchmarking and proposes new acquisitions. • Provides guidance to senior and staff at large as required. • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of relevant programming language(s) and ability to use programming skills to develop information systems. Knowledge of system development workflow and document flow processes, ability to conduct research and gather information from a wide variety of standard and non-standard sources. Ability to develop innovative and interactive visualizations transforming complex trade and macroeconomics data to a web format that is easy to use, intuitive, and achieve desire organizational outcomes. Knowledge of engine optimization, digital analytics, web and social media monitoring tools is desirable. Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Job – Specific Qualification
Formal training in computer science is desirable.
Work Experience
Seven years of experience in information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher is desirable. Experience in data journalism is desirable. Demonstrated experience in creating websites, innovative web content and data visualization focusing on trade and macroeconomics is desirable. Experience using software, programmes and tools such as GIS, Javascript, D3.js, html/CSS, Python, PHP, AWS, UI/UX design, frontend/backend, SQL, Linux/Mac is desirable. Experience working in an international organization is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by a competency-based interview.
Special Notice
This is a project-funded position. The initial duration of this temporary job opening is for three (3) months with possibility of extension, starting in March 2024. The extension of the appointment is subject to satisfactory performance, the availability of funds and the continuing need of the service.
