The County Offices are in major towns and therefore have the required social amenities – schools and hospitals. The ASALs’ climate conditions are generally characterized as hot and dry. The rains are expected in March to May and November to February. The area experiences long dry seasons as well as flash floods. There is adequate public transport to facilitate movement i.e. buses and taxis. There internet is available but in some cases it is weak. Power outages are also experienced from time to time- important to have the phone and computers There are cases of insecurity, and the staff is expected to be vigilant and keep in touch with the UNDSS focal points. Kiswahili is widely spoken – but majority of locals may not be very fluent. Important to respect the cultures of the locals to ensure a good working and living environment.
