Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

As a standard-setting organization, the United Nations has a particular responsibility to lead by example in ensuring the equal and active participation of women at all levels of the UN system. This is also necessary for integrating a gender perspective into UN policies and programmes. UN Women is mandated to lead, coordinate and promote the accountability of the UN system for women’s equal representation.

Unit/ Project Background:

The Office of the Focal Point for Women in the UN System at UN-Women/Gender Parity (hereafter the Office) at UN Women Headquarters in New York is seeking a full-time Gender Parity Intern to support the work of the team. The mandate of the Office is to support the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s System-wide Strategy on Gender Parity across the whole UN system.

The Office aims to accelerate progress in achieving the General Assembly mandated goal of 50:50 gender balance at all levels in the UN system and in creating enabling working environments in support of parity. Leveraging UN Women’s system-wide coordination mandate, the Office leads and coordinates the network of 500 UN Gender Focal Points, engages in gender parity and enabling environments related policy work as well as provides technical advice and support for the development of entity-specific implementation plans to reach parity and other related work. The Office also maintains and administers UN System-wide Dashboard on Gender Parity and the UN System-wide Knowledge Hub on Addressing Sexual Harassment.

This internship will provide deep insight into the UN system-wide and inter-governmental work of the Office. The Gender Parity Intern will gain experience in inter-agency collaboration by supporting and monitoring the system-wide parity progress, including related to the creation of enabling working environments. The Gender Parity Intern will support the Office’s analysis and reporting on gender parity related matters. She/he will also have an opportunity to provide content to the Dashboard and Hub, as well as requested parity related products. She/he will also support UN system-wide communications, including through the maintenance of the Extranet for the UN Gender Focal Points and the UN system-wide Knowledge Hub on Addressing Sexual Harassment, and the work related to the network of Gender Focal Points.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision and guidance of the Senior Adviser and Focal Point for Women in the UN System and/or Gender Parity Specialist, the intern will assist the efforts to improve gender parity and create enabling environments within the United Nations’ System.

Internship activities will include:
