Terms of Reference

Organizational context

The internship will be placed in the ASD Section, which is part of the Policy and Law Service (PLS) in the Division of International Protection (DIP). The ASD Section comprises three units: the Asylum Capacity Development Unit; the Status Determination Unit and the COI and Country Guidance Unit. The intern will support all workstreams in the ASD Section.

The position

The intern will be assigned a range of research and analytic assignments, with a strong focus on research and policy analysis. The internship offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a solid understanding of UNHCR’s policy and advocacy work with a range of external actors.

Duties and responsibilities

• Conduct country-specific research on the human rights and security situation in countries of origin in response to information needs identified by UNHCR offices;
• Draft sections of UNHCR country guidance documents;
• Contribute to the management and strategic expansion of UNHCR’s knowledge-sharing platforms;
• Compile documents and/or draft reports on different RSD or asylum capacity development topics;
• Attend and take notes at meetings along with relevant UNHCR staff (UNHCR ExCom; Human Rights Council, UN Treaty Body sessions, etc.);
• Undertake researching, drafting, coordination support or other related activities in the furtherance of ASD Section deliverables.

Minimum qualifications required

In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.

Qualifications and skills
Necessary:
• Strong research skills, including a good understanding of research methods, and the ability to analyse large amounts of information;
• Ability to draft documents in English up to publication standards;
• Strong attention to detail;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Proficiency using the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint);
• Ability to multi-task and prioritize appropriately.
Desirable:
• Prior experience with or knowledge of Refugee Status Determination (RSD) procedures, including the role of country of origin information (COI) in RSD;
• Experience of drafting COI reports or using COI in RSD procedures;
• Language skills (French, Spanish, Russian, or Arabic) are useful but not a requirement for the internship.
Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9.00am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team at UNHCR’s Headquarters in Geneva.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
