Responsibilities
Within limits of delegated authority, the Graphic Arts Assistant will be responsible for the following duties: • Assists in the layout and preparation of information materials, including to be delivered by digital means (including social media), in consultation with authors and other relevant staff, establishes mock-ups to meet communications objectives; prepares submission schedules for various communications products (e.g. newsletters, flyers, brochures, notes, research papers, web-stories). • In consultation with relevant staff/units, assists in the planning the design, production and scheduling of graphic material, including web-design; assists in providing technical support for the design, layout, and mock up of various communications products, using relevant publishing tools, services or products. • Acts as liaison person for web developers and designers, IT staff and consultants for the regular population and maintenance of the eTrade for all platform. • Gathers information for articles or features; searches, compiles and selects photographs and creates graphics, manipulates this material prior to preparation of final proofs. • Determines specifications for types of products, and adapts to web-design when needed etc. • Assists in the development and maintenance of a storage and retrieval system for artwork and print components (e.g. mock ups, galleries). • Liaises with internal services and external providers – including web- as needed. • Performs other related work as required.
Competencies
• Professionalism – Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, design and layout. Knowledge of internal UN printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, page layout and photograph sizing. Ability to produce high-quality graphic material for print and online projects. Knowledge of standard design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, HTML, CSSIn-Design Illustrator), data analytics tools as well as and user experience (web accessibility) issues. Knowledge of Canva. Education
High school diploma or equivalent is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced from five (5) to three (3) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher.
Job – Specific Qualification
Work Experience
Five years of experience in publications production, including desktop publishing, graphic design and layout, or related area is required. Experience in building sound communication supports (both print and online), including through web-based and digital supports is desirable. Experience in managing Word-press websites is desirable. Experience with design tools (Adobe Creative Suite, In-Design Illustrator), data analytics tools and user experience (web accessibility) issues is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
