Background

UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Country Programme Division under the leadership of the Deputy Country Representative manages the Programme support to Ethiopia, including Joint Programmes. In its work through Strategic Note 2021-2025, UN Women ECO is focusing on six thematic areas: Women Economic Empowerment, National planning and budgeting; Coordination for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women; Women, Peace and Security and Humanitarian Action ; Ending Violence against Women and Girls and Women’s Participation in Leadership and Governance (WiLG).

In Ethiopia, UN Women’s pillar around Women’s participation in Leadership and Governance  contributes to UN Women global Strategic Plan (2022-2025) Impact area one ‘Governance and participation in public life’, and supports Ethiopia’s effort towards achievement of SDG Goal 5, Target 5.5; Goal 16, Target 16.7. The programme is in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework UNSDCF (2020-2025) in Ethiopia, particularly with Outcome 1 (All people in Ethiopia enjoy the rights and capabilities to realize their potential in equality and with dignity) and Outcome 2 (All people in Ethiopia live in a cohesive, just inclusive and democratic society); and UN

Women Ethiopia’s Strategic Note (2021- 2025) and Government of Ethiopia’s 10-year Perspective Plan (2020/21-2029/30) that aspires to bring women at the center of the country’s development.

Under its WiLG program, UN Women has engaged with over 4,000 women leaders and political aspirants in Ethiopia through capacity-building, mentorship, and networking initiatives. In this context, UN Women is seeking the assistance of a national Intern to enhance the delivery of various activities under its WiLG program. The intern will also contribute to expanding UN Women’s reach to young emerging leaders to facilitate intergenerational leadership development opportunities. Working closely with the WiLG team, the intern will report directly to the Program Specialist, with overall guidance from the Deputy Representative.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

With guidance and overall supervision from WiLG Programme Specialist, the Intern is expected to undertake the following tasks:

  • Support the implementation of project activities related to Women’s Leadership and Governance Program particularly related to women leaders networking and capacity building programs, (e.g. preparation of trainings, workshops or advocacy actions, drafting letters and other documents);
  • Draft meeting minutes or any other related documents necessary towards managing knowledge in the team;
  • Provide research support towards development of concept notes and program related documents to the team;
  • Review researches, guidelines, translated documents and provide comments;
  • Facilitate the initiation of a female youth focused program for a sustainable and intergenerational cohort of competent women leaders
  • Serving as a channel of communication and primary contact for both Senior and Junior  Women’s Leaders Networks
  • Undertake various administrative tasks and provision of logistics and procurement (both HR and Services) support including facilitating of travel, meeting organization etc.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

  • The intern must satisfy the below education requirements in the area of social sciencedevelopment studiesgender/women studies, political science, law or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Having experience on gender related issues is a plus.

The intern must satisfy at least one of the following internship education requirements  :

  1. Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
  3. Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within two-years of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skill (written and oral) in both Amharic and English is required.
