BACKGROUND:

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises, helping to restore health, safety, education, economic wellbeing, and power to people devastated by conflict and disaster. SCOPE OF WORK:

The Classroom Assistant will work with the Citizenship Instructor to effectively aid in the overall logistics of the Citizenship Education Program offered to Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs). These courses prepare LPRs for the civics and English portions of the U.S. Citizenship test, teaching students civics knowledge to help them participate fully in their lives as American citizens. This role will support the daily operations of CEP.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the day-to-day operations of the IRC’s Citizenship Education Program (CEP), either through classroom logistics, assistance, record keeping, class material preparation or other tasks.
  • Assist instructor in outreach actions to recruit new students, including enrollment.
  • Follow student enrollment procedures, including verifying the legal permanent resident (LPR) status of all students.
  • Assist with break-out sessions with students and classroom activities, including weekly Interview Preparation Workshops
  • Assist with pre/post-tests provided to all eligible students as needed. Input data (student data and test results) into various databases, including TOPSpro, Efforts-To-Outcomes (ETO).
  • Collaborate effectively with coworkers and interns.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of relevant experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations preferred.
  • Ability to be flexible, work independently and prioritize within tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills combined with the proven ability to multi-task, prioritize duties, and manage time effectively.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in work product.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English; some knowledge of one of the predominant languages of the local client base is a plus (Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Dari/Pashto).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook); ability to use the internet and other digital tools for data entry, research, and problem-solving purposes.

Working Environment:

  • Standard, professional office environment, including the current hybrid mode of remote work within San Diego County and required in-office days and some ‘field’ time within the service delivery area to perform the above-outlined responsibilities. Office working environment is subject to change based on organization/business needs.
  • Requires work at both City Heights and El Cajon offices; and
  • Requires evening work, with a possibility of weekends.
  • Standard office hours are Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5pm.

Posted pay ranges apply to US-based candidates. Ranges are based on various factors including the labor market, job type, internal equity, and budget.  Exact offers are calibrated by work location, individual candidate experience and skills relative to the defined job requirements.
