Job Purpose and Organizational Context

UNDP is the knowledge frontier organization for sustainable development in the UN Development System and serves as the integrator for collective action to realize the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UNDP’s policy work carried out at HQ, Regional and Country Office levels, forms a contiguous spectrum of deep local knowledge to cutting-edge global perspectives and advocacy. In this context, UNDP invests in the Global Policy Network (GPN), a network of field-based and global technical expertise across a wide range of knowledge domains.

Within the GPN, the Crisis Bureau guides UNDP’s corporate crisis-related strategies and vision for crisis prevention, response and recovery. The Bureau has the responsibility for support to prevention, crisis response, resilience and recovery work under the auspices of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. Crisis Bureau staff provide global strategic advice to UNDP management and technical advice to regional hubs and Country Offices; advocate for UNDP corporate messages, represent UNDP at multi-stakeholder and engage in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas. As part of the Global Policy Network (GPN), the Crisis Bureau works in an integrated manner with UNDP’s Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) ensuring that issues are fully integrated into UNDP’s development programmes.

The Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding and Responsive Institutions (CPPRI) Team covers the following thematic/programming areas as part of the Global Policy Network (GPN):

  1. Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding
  2. Climate Security
  3. Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE)
  4. Core government functions and local governance.
  5. Women, Peace and Security

Capacity Development Specialist will work within the Climate Security Sub Team and will contribute to the following areas of work:

  • Climate, peace and security capacity development activities
  • Climate, peace and security knowledge management initiatives and partnerships
  • Communications, advocacy and events on climate, peace and security
Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Capacity development (40%)
  • Coordinate the roll out of the 2024 iterations of the Climate, Peace and Security Experts Academy, including screening of partcipants, application form, enrollment and case study development, development of the programme, coordination of resource persons, and note taking and summary.
  • Supports partnerships and resource mobilization strategies.
  • Supports delivery of project deliverables and other duties as required.
  • Coordinate the climate, peace and security programming workshop, including the identification of the participants, development of the programme, coordination of resource persons, and note taking and summary.

 

2. Knowledge management (30%)

  • Coordinate the development, review and updating of the modules of the Climate, Peace and Security Experts, with module leads, suggest improvements and updates to package in consultation with key focal points to ensure content is up to date.
  • Review training materials and make improvements and updates to package in consultation with key staff to ensure best transfer of knowledge.
  • Develop the online campus into a professional, interactive, online e-learning package.
  • Provides support to the development of knowledge products, training materials, climate security risk analysis and assessments at global, regional and Country Office level.
  • Performs other consulting assignments, in collaboration with partners.
  • Assists in drafting sections of reports and studies, including the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of assessments or other background research activities and studies.

 

  1. Communications, advocacy and events (30%)
  • Prepares briefing notes, presentations, talking points and periodic updates as requested by senior management, Member States and other partners.
  • Provides substantive and logistical support to events, workshops and multi-partner consultations in coordination with partners, including preparing agendas, identifying participants, preparation of documents, presentations, logistics, meeting minutes etc.
  • Contribute to Communities of Practice, including UN Community of Practice on Climate and Security.
  • Prepares media and communications products (articles, stories, press releases, reports, human-interest stories, social media, inputs to publications, etc.)
  • Coordinates and supports the editing, design and publication of knowledge and advocacy products.
  • Support distribution and dissemination of relevant knowledge products; plan, develop and launch campaigns and roll-out strategies.

The incumbent will report to the Team Leader – Climate and Security Risk of the Conflict Prevention, Peacebuilding and Responsive Institutions (CPPRI), UNDP Crisis Bureau.

Required Skills and Experience
Education:
  • Advanced University degree (Master’s degreeor equivalent)  Climate Change, Environment, Security, international Relations, Conflict prevention/peacebuilding, or related areas is required    Or
  • A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the above fields o study, in combination with an additional two years of qualifying  experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree
Experience:
  • Minimum of  5 years (with masters degree) or 7 years (with bachelors degree) of relevant experience with the development of knowledge products for UN, government, and/or bilateral/multilateral organizations is required.
Desired additional skills and competencies

• Demonstrated experience in producing high quality practical advisory reports and knowledge products for a business and development/donor audience;

• Experience and good all-round knowledge of the UN system, in particular its international development/climate change AND its peace and security work;

• Demonstrated experience in organizing and facilitating consultative processes.

Required Language(s) (at working level)
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Good knowledge of other official UN languages is an advantage.
