Terms of Reference

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is offering a full-time internship with the Finance and Risk & Compliance Units at UNHCR MENA Regional Bureau in Amman.

Organizational context
UNHCR Regional Bureau for Middle East and North Africa provides strategic guidance as well as technical support and oversight (2nd Line) for Country Offices in the region. The incumbent will be supporting the Risk Management and the Finance Units.
The purpose of this internship assignment is to have a mutual benefit whereby the incumbent will gain hands-on experience by engaging in different activities as well as to have the opportunity to put in practice learnt skills. In return, UNHCR will benefit from fresh ideas gained through years of academic studies as well as from outside experience.
The position
With a regional context, the work scope will be focused on Risk Management and Finance areas. The work entails data analysis, monitoring of activities, extracting relevant reports, conducting reviews and research, as required.
The position will also require learning UNHCR internal tools through which the above tasks could be performed.
Duties and responsibilities
Finance:
• Assist in monitoring the financial transactions within the region and conduct validation exercises, when requested.
• In a regional context, assist in identifying financial risks (and opportunities), propose mitigations measures, and risk treatments.
• Assist in analysing the financial data, identify trends and irregularities in the region as well as produce relevant reports.
• Assist in the revision of country offices’ budget (ABOD) and ensure budget is developed in line with the intended strategies and related assumptions.
• Play a coordination role among country offices in the region and ensure to develop good relationship with country teams and peers.
• Support in organizing regional workshops, trainings, and meetings for the Finance function which aim at capacity enhancement and harmonization of practices.
• Assist in promoting the UN SG Efficiency Agenda Targets which aims at cost-efficiency and effectiveness through collaborations on and consolidations of back-office activities. Assist the Snr Finance Officer in reviewing cost savings recorded by country offices.
• Support the Regional Finance Team in their day-to-day work.
Risk and Compliance:

• Under the supervision and guidance of the Principal Risk Management and Compliance Adviser, support the MENA operations with business continuity planning, establishment of a compliance monitoring tool, as well as other risk migration activities and/or research as required.
Minimum qualifications required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
• Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
• Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
• Fluent in Arabic and English.

Desirable qualifications and skills
• Risk Management skills or trainings.
• Practical skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
• Some experience in capacity building.
• Knowledge in French would be an asset.
Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Sunday to Thursday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Amman.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
