Job Description

Position:             NYSA Youth Education Intern
Reports to:         Youth Education Supervisor
Position Term:    June 7, 2024 – August 30, 2024
Expected to be in person for specific program dates:
Training: July 1-3 2024, 9:00am – 5:00pm;
Program Dates: July 8, 2024 – August 16, 2024
15-24 hours a week: Monday-Thursday 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.

 

Background:
Since 1999, the IRC has developed partnerships with New York City public schools, community-based organizations and local colleges and universities to support the positive development of refugee and immigrant youth and their communities in New York City.  The Youth Education Program provides year-round programming working directly with refugee and immigrant youth, their parents and families, and their schools.

Position Overview:
The NYSA Youth Education Intern is expected to support the Youth Education team prepare and facilitate the Newcomer Youth Summer Academy, a six-week program focusing on preparing newly arrived immigrant youth to succeed at their grade level in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students ages 5 – 21 from over 20 countries will participate in academic, creative arts, physical education, and social emotional learning classes. Field Trips are held on Fridays.

The NYSA Youth Education Intern will have the opportunity to experience the multiple aspects of running a fast-paced in-person education program for newly arrived youth. This will include ensuring teachers turn in lesson plans on time, reviewing lesson plans, assisting with classroom observations, communicating with the Student Support Team and Operations team. Interns may be asked to step in and assist teachers in the classroom as needed.

Interns must be available to be in-person with the team at the school in Manhattan for full days of training on July 1-3, 2024 and 15-24 hours per week on Monday-Thursday during program days July 8- August 16, 2024.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Complete all staff training prior to the start of the program, as well as all program meetings and staff development activities thereafter
  •   Support program rollout, including facilitating orientation, training
  • Support program wrap-up, including survey reminders and analysis, staff follow-up and debrief
  • Model appropriate student behavior and academic engagement with the Academy students at all times
  • Assist in supervision of daily student meals and student arrival/dismissal
  • Assist in ensuring teachers provide weekly lesson plans and complete all paperwork required
  • Assist with facilitation with M&E (including assessments) throughout the program
  • Assist teachers and staff with classroom management
  • Complete all staff evaluation
  • Other tasks as assigned by Youth Education Supervisor and Youth Education Specialists


Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate student or graduate student working towards a degree in Education or related field.
  • Experience in education programming or teaching preferred
  • Knowledge of classroom procedures; health and safety precautions a plus
  • Experience working with children and/or peers highly desired
  • Ability to work well with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Flexible, innovative, accountable with a strong desire to learn.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English required. Second language proficiency in relevant language highly desirable (including Arabic, Dari, Farsi, French, Fulani, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Mandingo, Pashto, Russian, Spanish, Tigrinya, Ukrainian, Wolof)
  • Must be available for all training days and for the entire duration of the program. No exceptions.

Timeline:
Interviews and hiring occur on a rolling basis until positions are filled.

 

Working Environment: The Academy takes place in a centrally located New York City public school. All participants must be willing to relocate to New York City for the entirety of the Program.
