Context
The importance of implementing the Humanitarian-Development-Peace (HDP) nexus approach that seeks to bridge these three sectoral pillars is only growing in urgency. The humanitarian caseload is increasingly comprised of more protracted crises that merge basic needs requirements with longer-term community priorities, while several contexts traditionally focused on achieving sustainable development have been affected by new conflicts or climate related disasters that threaten their progress. At the same time, the funding landscape is becoming increasingly constrained, underscoring the need for synergies and effective use of resources across remits.
This mapping of good practices of the HDP Nexus report being led and coordinated by UNICEF and ALNAP (Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance in humanitarian action) serves as an update to the 2021 Interagency Standing Committee (IASC) mapping. It serves to assess progress on implementation, summarize outcomes achieved, and identify the remaining barriers to implementation, useful enablers to accelerate progress, and examples of effective programming that could be scaled up. Based on this assessment, it suggests recommendations for further collective action.
The value of this mapping exercise lies not only in its capacity to document and analyze experiences but also in its potential to facilitate knowledge exchange. By showcasing good practices and lessons learned in diverse contexts, this initiative contributes to a collective understanding of how the HDP Nexus can be practically implemented. The sharing of insights across different settings has the potential to inform policies, guide practitioners, and foster a more effective and coordinated approach to addressing complex challenges at the intersection of humanitarian response, development, and peacebuilding.
