Mission and objectives
UNDP’s Global Programme on Nature for Development brings together three different initiatives under one program – the Equator Initiative, the National Biodiversity Initiative, and the Global Forest Initiative – in order to identify, foster, showcase and celebrate nature-based solutions that help achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at local, national and international levels. The work of the Global Programme on Nature for Development contributes to UNDP’s Strategic Plan 2014-2017 by charting sustainable development pathways through the conservation, restoration and sustainable management of biodiversity and ecosystems; and by promoting inclusive and effective democratic governance in the area of natural resources.
Context
The e-learning course “Gender equality, women’s empowerment, and leadership on biodiversity planning, monitoring, and reporting” consists of two lessons that are designed to help learners improve biodiversity conservation outcomes by promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and leadership. The course is based on a recently UNDP publication (https://www.undp.org/publications/gender-equality-womens-empowerment-and-leadership-national-biodiversity-planning-monitoring-and-reporting) and emphasizes how entry points for gender equality can be applied at the local and regional level for gender-responsive small-scale conservation and sustainable development projects. The course will be launched via Learning for Nature in April 2024.
Gender equality, women’s empowerment, and leadership are central issues to international biodiversity conservation efforts. A new e-learning course will provide governments with tools to improve biodiversity conservation outcomes by engaging women, as well as men, as central actors during the planning, monitoring, and reporting on National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), the main instrument for implementing the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) at the national-level.
