Mission and objectives
UNICEF in Turkiye works to protect the rights of children and adolescents in Turkey since 1951. UNICEF’s programme in Turkiye focuses on the needs of the most vulnerable children in the areas of education, child protection, health care, social policy, adolescents and youth, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Context
In order for UNICEF to be an effective advocate for diversity and inclusion, UNICEF itself needs embody a more representative and inclusive workplace, where UNICEF core values are the foundation for inclusive behaviors and actions.

In this respect, UNICEF Türkiye is undertaking important steps to address broader gaps in the office’s diversity by embarking on expanded and deliberate efforts to raise staff awareness and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). These efforts will also consider wider outreach to underrepresented communities with a focus on persons with disabilities and plus one (considers factors such as race, ethnicity, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and sex characteristics). By increasing the diversity of the workforce, UNICEF Türkiye aims is to build and enhance the inclusive culture that promotes and appreciates diverse thinking, learning, and reflection. Moreover, the country is currently facing a complex humanitarian situation, marked by the recent earthquake that has impacted 9.1 million people. Hence, these efforts are important to ensure the unique needs of the affected communities are also supported.

Furthermore, given the increased level of disability due to injuries from the devasting earthquake in 2023, and UNICEF’s commitment to strengthen its disability inclusive programming — there is a need to deepen understanding on scale and context of disability prevalence, and opportunities to programme on both prevention and response.

Task description
The national Youth UN Volunteer will contribute to and support the Human Resources team’s efforts on DEI to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion across the talent lifecycle; while also help programme’s understand the issues and opportunities on promoting disability inclusive programming.

Under the direct supervision of Human Resources Officer, the UN Volunteer Human Resources Assistant will undertake the following tasks:

– Building on UNICEF global initiatives, contribute to the development of concepts related to diversity and inclusion, to identify pressing gaps and integrate perspectives from multiple groups.
– Gathers, support with the analysis to understand barriers towards diversity, equity, and inclusion — including in programmes that seek to deliver equitable services. Researches and develops metrics and evaluation processes to assess the effectiveness of DEI initiatives; and identifies and maps current and potential programmatic entry points.
– Support the team in conducting research and analysis on best practices and stays up to date on what other UNICEF offices and external organizations are doing in areas relevant to diversity, equity and inclusion and what levels of success the various program aspects are reaching.
– Provide support to the talent outreach efforts, in identifying talent sources for underrepresented groups. Support HR team on ensuring sourcing materials such as advertisements are accessible to everyone and provide suggestions on how to improve.
– Assists in organizing learning sessions/workshops and events on DEI. Develop, source, and circulate creative and interactive DEI content that invites office wide dialogue and continuous learning.
– Support the team on establishing a clear mechanism for implementation and monitoring of reasonable accommodation requests.
– Perform other tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities:

– Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day, 5th of December).
– Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
– Provide annual and end of assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities (for instance at https://vra.unv.org),
– Contribute articles/wrjte-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
– Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers.
– Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

18 – 26

Nationality
Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

Requirements
Required experience
1 years of experience in relevant area.
• Demonstrated interest in and/or knowledge of broad range of human resources areas, e.g., staffing, training, and development.
• Drive to be a change agent in DEI and commitment to effecting change across divergent groups,
• Good quantitative and qualitative analytical skills and able to contribute to the team. Ability to take initiative; use sound judgment and discretion when working with sensitive or confidential data and information.
• Good interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of internal & external partners.
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.
• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word among others), email and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment.
• Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; Have affinity with or interest in UNICEF’s work, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN system.

Summary of national UN Youth Volunteer entitlements:
– Volunteer Living Allowance (per month): USD 980 (disbursing in Turkish Lira)
– Entry lump sum (one-time payment): USD 400
– Exit allowance: USD 100 per contract service month (when successful completion of the assignment)
– Medical, dental, life and disability insurance: Cigna Private Insurance (including eligible dependents)
– Annual leave: 2.5 days accrued per calendar month. Uncertified sick leave: 7 days for 12 months and 4 days for shorter assignments
– Access to different learning platforms and UN & UNV network
