ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT

Under the supervision of the Climate Change Coordinator, the Job holder will assist in the roll out of projects and programmes that focus on the sustainable and responsible management of natural resources to promote climate smart farming practices to achieve food security. The primary focus will be on co-designing and ensuring the successful implementation of water, agriculture, and soil conservation initiatives country wide in coordination with respective government ministries and stakeholders. The job holder shall be responsible for assessing, managing and enhancement of environmental aspects related to water resources, soil quality and agricultural practices while promoting the integration of innovative agri-solutions to maximize the adoption of proven, sustainable traditional practices that increase food production. The overall purpose of the job holder is to strategically ensure that all proposed and ongoing projects maintain a balance on the need for enhancing agri-productivity with responsible environmental stewardship contributing to long-term healthy ecosystem, water resources and soil quality.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES (not all-inclusive)

 

Key duties will include, but will not be limited to:

 

1. Water Resource management

  • Co-design and monitor the implementation of resilience projects that ensure optimization of water use efficiency, sustainable and efficient reuse of wastewater and enhancement of water quality for agri-productivity within rural and peri-urban areas.
  • Integrate water conservation and manage practices within all projects being implemented to ensure sustainability.
  • Prepare detailed designs, scope of works and specifications of various water resource management and irrigation projects to optimize water use and improve crop production.
  • Spearhead baseline assessment, analyze data and make recommendations on water resource management projects.

 

2. Soil Conservation measures

  • Work with smallholder farmers to promote and implement sustainable farming practices that will improve soil health and organic content.
  • Evaluate soil quality and implementation of conservation measures within various project sites to ensure the prevention of erosion and soil degradation.
  • Advise on soil remediation, conservation and improvement techniques to be integrated in current and proposed projects where necessary.

 

3. Environmental Sustainability

  • Promote sustainable agricultural practices that minimize environmental impact and support ecological biodiversity.
  • Engage with local communities, government ministries and other stakeholders to foster environmental and ecological practices.
  • Conduct Environmental and social risk screening and assessment of all projects and develop proposed mitigation plans.
  • Ensure all projects being implemented are Compliant to national environmental regulation and are aligned to various donor’s environmental performance standards
  • Identify opportunities for sustainability initiatives and assist in their designing, planning and implementation. Such opportunities include Agri-photovoltaic, Bioremediations initiatives.
  • Review relevant national and sectorial reports on environmental sustainability.

 

4. Project planning and Coordination

  • Responsible for the coordination of all natural resource resilience activities and approached being implemented.
  • Organize training for all stakeholders and partners on the various recommended resilience project and activities (Climate smart agriculture, Soil and water conservation, Sustainable land management practices)
  • Prepare guiding material on key and contextual technical approaches for projects including (sustainable land management practices (SLM) , Environment and Climate change(ECC).

STANDARD MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  

Education: Advanced University Degree in one of the following disciplines: Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Science, Soil science or any other related field. or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or training/courses.

Minimum Work Experience: For holders of Advanced degree, a minimum of 1 year of post-graduation relevant professional work experience in the field of Environmental science, Environment Engineer, Natural Resource Management, Agricultural engineering, Agronomy or Soil Science. For holders of first university degree, a minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional work experience as described above.

Languages: Fluency in English and Arabic, both oral and written, is required.

DESIRED EXPERIENCES FOR ENTRY INTO THE ROLE

  • At least 3 years of work experience in designing agricultural, irrigation and disaster risk reduction projects.
  • At least 3 years of prior work experience in rural resilience work.
  • 3 years of work experience in designing and supervising rural resilience projects.
  • Experience working directly with local communities on locally led community development projects.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Position Title: Environmental Engineer (Soil, water, & Renewables)

Contract Type: Service Contract

Grade: Level 8

Duty Station: Baghdad, Iraq

Salary: Starting at 3188 USD per month.

Medical Plan: Valid medical plan for the staff member, spouse, and dependent children under the age of 18 years old.

Annual Leave: 30 working days per annum
