BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC is committed to restoring safety, human dignity, self-reliance, and hope to these individuals. Staff members working in the Salt Lake City office reflect this commitment by providing services to over 500 refugees each year.

SCOPE OF WORK:

IRC-SLC Health Programs promote physical and psychosocial wellbeing by ensuring access to healthcare services and providing culturally appropriate, strength-based, educational programming.

The Refugee Mental Health internship will provide individual(s) with an opportunity to gain experience in mental health screening procedures, data collection and tracking, and mental health referral protocols. The individual(s) will provide direct support to the Mental Health Program in identifying clients in need of services and supporting clients accessing treatment. They will engage in program development and improvement to support mental and emotional wellbeing of refugee and immigrant families and individuals, and work to reduce stigma around mental health within these communities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

•            Participate in weekly health program meetings and weekly supervision

•            Administer mental health screenings to newly arrived clients and make necessary referrals and follow-up care

•            Assist clients in accessing mental health services, and gaining self-sufficiency in access to mental and emotional health resources

•            Strengthen relationships with partner organizations and identify improved avenues for treatment

•            Identify areas of growth and development for program and assist in program development goals

•            Provide public transit orientations to clients or transport client to health appointment weekly

•            Offer relevant resources to support mental and emotional wellbeing in the context of mental health screening, referral and post-screening follow-up

•            Provide psychoeducation to refugee individuals and families

•            Other, as assigned and/or determined by Mental Health Program Supervisor


Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

•            Background and/or current study in social work, psychology, public health or related field

•            Experience working with diverse populations and with interpreters

•            Motivated, flexible, reliable, and able to work independently

•            Demonstrated communication skills and ability to work as part of a team

•            Computer skill in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

•            Must be currently enrolled in a graduate/undergraduate program, or have graduated less than 6 months ago

POSITION LOGISTICS:

•            Length of Service: 10-12 weeks

•            Compensation: This an unpaid internship

•            Hours: 15-20 hours per week

•            Supervisor: Addie Rutter, Mental Health Screening Specialist
