Mission and objectives
Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, established in December 1991 by General Assembly resolution 46/182. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA’s mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions.

Context
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)/Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Joint Unit, also known as UNEP/OCHA Joint Environment Unit (JEU), is housed within OCHA’s Emergency Response Section in Geneva. Founded in 1994, it helps Member States prepare for and respond to environmental emergencies. The Unit responds as one UN to the environmental dimensions of emergencies. It pairs UN Environment’s environmental expertise with the OCHA-coordinated humanitarian networks. By coordinating international efforts and mobilizing partners, the JEU assists countries affected by disasters and crises and works to enhance the environmental sustainability of humanitarian action. Currently, the JEU is organizing a series of events for the 2024 Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Week (HNPW) and has several graphic design needs associated with the update and creation of communication materials including factsheets, maps, and charts. And current team in Geneva is providing its full capacity and the support with graphic design if necessary.

Task description
We are looking for one Online Volunteer who under the guidance of the Associate Programme Officer, supports us with the graphic design needs of the OCHA/UNEP Joint Environment Unit including the Humanitarian Networks and Partnerships Week (HNPW) materials, the JEU’s 30 Year Anniversary, and graphic support for the 2024 Progress Report. In particular, the Online Volunteer is asked to:

a) assist in updating the unit’s factsheets by providing visual support. The factsheets that need to be updated are the ones of the OCHA/UNEP Joint Environment Unit (JEU), the Nexus Environment Assessment Tool (NEAT+), the Environment and Humanitarian Action (EHA) Connect, Emergency Service Response, the Responses in 2023, and the Environment and Emergencies Training (EET);
b) provide visualization support for the JEU’s 2024 Annual Progress Report.

These tasks are an approximate and would change according to the Online Volunteer’s advice on how the goals could be met the most efficiently. The Online Volunteer will have the opportunity to build connections with the Emergency Response Section at OCHA and learn about the ways in which graphic design can support the successful delivery of environmental response to emergencies worldwide.

In terms of deliverables, we expect that the Online Volunteer creates in e-versions:
– 5 Updated factsheets for the JEU, the NEAT+, the EHA, the 2023 Responses, and the EET respectively;
– Visual supports for the 2023 JEU Progress Report: 1 cover photo, 1 map displaying the responses done in 2023, and 2 charts demonstrating JEU’s work streams.

Requirements
Required experience
Candidates should possess graphic design and visualization expertise, particularly using tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign along with excellent communication, teamworking, writing, and editing skills. Experience with design tools is also essential. An interest in environmental issues is an advantage. The ideal candidate should excel in graphic design, problem solving, and creative visualization. Strong attention to detail, time management, adaptability, collaboration with non-technical team members, and a commitment to continuous learning are key for success in this role.
