Mission and objectives
UNDP is the global development network of the United Nations system. It advocates for change, and connects countries to the knowledge, experiences and resources their populations need to improve their lives. We are on the ground in 166 countries, helping them identify their own solutions to the national and global development challenges they face. To strengthen their capacities, these countries can rely at any time on UNDP staff and its wide range of partners. World leaders have committed to achieving the Millennium Development Goals, the overarching goal of which is to halve poverty by 2030. The UNDP network connects and coordinates efforts at the global and national levels with a view to achieving these objectives. We are focused on helping countries develop and share solutions to problems. UNDP helps developing countries mobilize and use international aid effectively. In all our activities, we encourage the protection of human rights and promote the active participation of women.
Context
The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is the global development network of the United Nations System. UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequalities, it has been present in Niger since 1977. As the lead United Nations Development Agency, UNDP Niger plays an essential role in supporting the country in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2030 Agenda’s fundamental principle of leaving no one behind and eliminating inequalities is at the heart of everything we do. UNDP Niger sees youth as an essential force capable of bringing about positive transformative changes. The largest generation of young people in history faces challenges, including lack of employment, but also unprecedented opportunities for sustainable human development. In Niger, the problem of youth employment remains a major challenge, exacerbated by various socio-economic factors. These include the increasing requirement for prior experience in tenders, creating a significant barrier for young graduates seeking work. This requirement for prior professional experience in calls for tenders most often constitutes a real barrier for young graduates. Youth represents nearly 70% of the population of Niger, hence the need to take into account the aspirations of young people and the challenges they face, by giving them the opportunity to have professional experiences thus enabling them to be able to claim lasting employment. With the Young Champions program, UNDP Niger gives young Nigeriens from all social classes the opportunity to acquire quality professional experience by working for UNDP Niger.
