Duties, Responsibilities and Output expectations:
The Junior Professional Officer (JPO) will provide technical support in the following areas:
1. Assists the Assistant Director-General and the executive team in running cross-cutting projects and provides technical support to high priority initiatives and strategically relevant projects that run out of the executive office, including, but not limited to, the second phase of the Investment Round project, starting in January 2024, after the Executive Board decision.
2. Supports coordination and communications with internal and external partners in exchanging effective information, collecting intelligence and planning the content of meetings of strategic relevance. Prepares background, communication and advocacy materials for meetings to ensure the agenda enables decision-making and information-sharing critical to the progress of the project.
3. Supports external relations through conducting research and political analysis related to the work of the external relations division responding to gaps and needs. Conducts sensitive analysis and dissemination of information. (i.e. donor and other stakeholder analysis, market analysis etc.)
4. Provides technical support, research and analysis to the Assistant Director-General in the drafting and preparation of internal and external strategic communications products.
This includes the production of aligned, coherent, strategic and quality briefing notes, key messages, talking points, and concept notes addressing critical global health, external relations and governance issues for high level meetings such as Governing Bodies, Member State information sessions and internal town hall meetings. Provides clear, attractive and accurate slide decks for presentations.
5. Supports the ADG in optimizing the follow-up to External Relations meetings of strategic relevance, including documenting decisions and action points and managing an action tracker tool. Ensures diligent follow-up on agreed action points is carried out by those assigned.
6. Provides a full range of technical support functions to the Office of the Assistant-General and other tasks that may be assigned by the supervisor that contribute to the well-functioning of the daily work in the office.
During the period of assignment, the JPO would have contributed to the following key outputs:
- Planning, analysis and implementation of cross-cutting projects
- Functioning and daily running of an executive office
- High level dialogues with stakeholders and follow-up actions as needed.
Qualifications and Experience:
Education:
Minimum: Advanced university degree in Political Science, Social or Health Sciences, Business Administration, international development, public health or related field.
Desirable: Training/experience in diplomacy, international relations or policy research.
Work experience:
Minimum: At least two years of experience – some of which in an international context – external relations, working with multiple stakeholders, organizing meetings, communication, and health/development policy analysis, or related field (or any combination of the foregoing).
Desirable: Similar experience of support to senior executive leadership in a large (national or multi-national) organization. Experience of the UN system would be an asset.
Skills required for the assignment:
Minimum: Understanding and knowledge of global health.
Strong strategic and analytical thinker.
Strong analytical and writing skills with an ability to analyse and synthesize information from multiple sources.
Strong professional skills in the development of reports and persuasive documents.
Fluency in spoken and written English.
Excellent computer skills including advanced level power point skills.
Desirable: Knowledge of other UN languages. Good organizational and networking skills.
