Duties and Responsibilities
United Nations Environment Programme – Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) is a partnership between United Nations Environment and the global financial sector created in the wake of the 1992 Earth Summit with a mission to promote sustainable finance. More than 450 financial institutions, including banks, insurers, and investors, work with UN Environment to understand today’s environmental, social and governance challenges, why they matter to finance, and how to actively participate in addressing them. UNEP FI provides the secretariat for the industry-led, UN-convened Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA). The Alliance brings together over 100 banks from 40 countries with over US$74 trillion in assets, which are committed to aligning their lending and investment portfolios with net-zero emissions by 2050.

The UNEP FI Internship for Climate Change Programme Support is for six (6) months.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities:

This year, the NZBA is undertaking several large and exciting projects, including the celebration of its second anniversary, supporting work in advance of COP28 and implementing its accountability mechanism on netzero targets. The Alliance seeks a multi-talented intern to support communications and data analysis surrounding these projects. From the communications side, this role will assist in social media content creation, event planning, and internal communications. From the data analysis side, this role will assist in 19.10.2023net-zero target research and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data sets. Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the individual’s background as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

− Conduct research on members’ net-zero target submissions and analyze qualitative and quantitative data sets related to net-zero targets, capital flows, financing the net zero transition and GHG accounting.
− Build data visualizations to help communicate findings from net-zero target analysis.
− Support the team in the operationalization of the accountability mechanism.
− Keep track of members’ net-zero target submissions to trigger the accountability mechanism as needed.
− Assist with the communications workflow involved in onboarding new members
− Assist with the writing, editing, design, and publication of communications content, including social media, event announcements, web content, digital content and internal communications.
− Assist with communication around on-boarding of new NZBA members.
− Assist with media monitoring.
− Support on COP28 events and progress report publication.
− Assist with day-to-day coordination of meetings, events and webinars.
− Additional duties as needed, for example pursuing opportunities for synergies on intersectional issues across the wider banking or climate teams.

Competencies:

Required: • Effective communication and writing skills (English) • Highly attentive to details • Teamwork / Interpersonal skills • Advanced Excel/Word skills

Additional: • Graphic design/data visualization experience • Previous experience in dataset analysis • Familiarity with banking sector, climate science or GHG accounting is desirable but not required.

Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Undergraduate in communications, journalism, environmental studies, economics, business administration, finance, or environmental studies, ideally with some experience in data analysis.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
