Overview of the functions of the post

Under the general authority of the Assistant Director-General for Culture, the direct supervision of the Director of the Culture and Emergencies Entity, and in close coordination with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the Individual Consultant shall:

Long Description

  • [Mapping] Develop thorough mapping of documentation efforts by international and national entities, including organizations and foundations, focusing on the protection and preservation of Jewish cultural heritage globally;
  • [List of organizations] Compile a comprehensive list of international and national organizations that have been actively involved in projects related to the documentation and safeguarding of Jewish cultural heritage;
  • [Assessment of the state of documentation] Undertake a detailed assessment of the current state of documentation for both movable and immovable Jewish cultural heritage, also by identifying existing gaps and needs. In this context, a special attention shall be paid to uncovering any regional discrepancies in the documentation and protection of Jewish cultural heritage, particularly focusing on Central Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Arab world;
  • [Priority sites] Identify and prioritize sites of Jewish heritage in urgent need of safeguarding and rehabilitation, especially in the aforementioned regions.
  • [Recommendations] Based on the findings, propose strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing the documentation, preservation, and management of Jewish cultural heritage. These recommendations should contribute towards the development of a comprehensive inventory of Jewish cultural heritage worldwide.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Master’s degree or higher in culture, heritage, humanities, or related fields.

Work Experience

  • At least 7 years of relevant professional experience in cultural heritage protection.

Skills and competencies

  • Excellent organizational, planning coordination and multi-tasking skills;
  • Excellent capacity to collect, synthesize and analyse information from various sources and to write documents in a clear and concise manner;
  • Autonomy combined with ability to work in a multi-cultural environment;

Languages

Fluency in English and/or French (written and spoken).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Work Experience

  • Previous experience working on projects related documentation or protection of Jewish heritage
  • Previous experience working with a multilateral or international organization.

Skills and competencies

  • Familiarity with the work and general functioning of international organizations, in particular the UN System.
  • Sound knowledge of UNESCO’s normative framework in the field of culture, including the UNESCO 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
