Duties and Responsibilities

Provide substantive and technical support to UN-Women’s engagement with intergovernmental processes with a particular focus on support for the Commission on the Status of Women

  • Support the management and coordination of UN-Women’s preparations for the annual sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women, including preparation of meetings of coordination working groups and follow-up, and responding to inquiries regarding normative intergovernmental processes,
  • Make arrangements for meetings and briefings of the CSW Bureau, including preparation of briefing notes, background papers and proposed agendas, drafting of minutes of meetings, and follow-up to Bureau decisions as directed, drafting of statements for the CSW Chair, and liaising with DGACM on procedural and logistical matters.

Organize panel discussions, side events, briefings and other alliance building activities

  • Prepare concept notes and issues papers, and identify possible speakers, for interactive events and advocacy initiatives;
  • Make all necessary organizational and logistical arrangements, including draft budgets, and draft summaries of meetings;
  • Provide technical inputs to information dissemination, including through UN Women’s website and social media.

Undertake research and analysis on gender perspectives in regard to assigned areas of work, in particular in relation to themes covered by the Commission on the Status of Women and/or the General Assembly

  • Keep track of trends in reflection of gender perspectives in the work of intergovernmental bodies and draft reports of the Secretary-General on assigned issues, for submission to the General Assembly, and prepare substantive papers, background and briefing notes, talking points and key messages;
  • Prepare the annotated agenda and organization of work for Commission sessions, in accordance with mandates and practice, as well as documentation forecasts;
  • Review draft work of others and provide comments and inputs towards strengthening gender perspectives.

Provide substantive and technical support to the servicing of intergovernmental bodies

  • Prepare in-session analytical summaries of debates, and support intergovernmental negotiations on resolutions and agreed conclusions, as applicable;
  • Monitor assigned intergovernmental processes and prepare minutes on deliberations, with proposed action points for UN-Women, and ensure follow-up as directed.

Provide other support to the effective functioning of the Section, as required

  • Serve as UN-Women’s documentation management focal point by preparing UN-Women’s documentation forecasts, and follow up on compliance with established mandates, schedules and practice;
  • Draft articles and newsfeeds for UN Women websites and Intranet sites, with a focus on preparations for and outcomes of intergovernmental meetings;
  • Participate in UN Women cross-organizational and thematic working groups to represent the Section.

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organisation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education and Certification:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent in the field of communications, political sciences, law, economics, public relations, journalism, public administration or other relevant/similar field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in law, gender equality, communications and advocacy, and research and analysis  at the national and international level. Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and in handling web-based management systems is required.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is desirable (French, Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish).
