UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of its efforts, UN Women is mandated to lead and co-ordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming are translated into action. In line with the Tanzania’s national priorities, UN Women’s strategic Plan 2022-2026 lays out the agency’s unique role and comparative advantage in supporting national stakeholders in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women by strengthening women’s leadership and participation in political and governance systems, gender statistics, implementation of global gender norms and standards, ending violence against women and girls, and women’s economic empowerment.

Context:

UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. Based on the vision of gender equality proclaimed by the United Nations Charter, UN Women works to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and girls, empower women, and achieve gender equality as partners and actors in development, human rights, humanitarian action, peace and security. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. Every year, the UNITE Campaign focuses on a specific theme. The campaign calls on citizens to show how much they care about ending violence against women and girls by sharing the actions they are taking to create a world free from violence towards women. UN WOMEN in cooperation with UNV has established a Special programme Initiative, aiming at engaging UN Volunteers to support UN WOMEN and in particular the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign in Tanzania. The selected UN Community Volunteers will assist the UN WOMEN team in Tanzania in: • Awareness, Advocacy and Outreach: Supporting UN WOMEN to organize local events, online campaigns, and use social media to amplify messages about ending violence against women. In addition, selected UN Community Volunteers will engage in creative activism through community outreach, raising awareness and promoting stories.

Task description:

Under the direct supervision of the UN WOMEN Communications Analyst, the UN Community Volunteer will: • Undergo orientation on processes and activities undertaken by UN WOMEN under the 16 Days of Activism against GBV campaign. • Assist UN WOMEN to organize local events and virtual discussions, and community outreach activities that raise awareness on violence against women and girls, in line with UN WOMEN planned activities. • Assist in amplifying messages about ending violence against through social media campaigns led by UN WOMEN. • Engage community members, volunteers, and leaders in spreading messages of ending gender-based violence. • Assist in the creation of multimedia content and stories to promote ending violence against women and girls. • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Living conditions and remarks

This is an unpaid volunteer assignment. UN Volunteer for events supporting UN Women in Tanzania will not receive any financial compensation for this assignment. UN VOLUNTEERS FOR EVENTS SUPPORTING UNWOMEN IN TANZANIA The support provided by the UN Volunteer for events supporting UNWOMEN for the 16 days of Activism campaign in Tanzania is a Special Programme Initiative (SPI) by UNV. SPIs respond to volunteer-specific needs of the United Nations system and donor entities. They are established by specific policy documents that address the desired programmatic aims and broader SDG outcomes in line with UNV guiding principles. UN Volunteers for Events are governed by the particular conditions set out in their offers and contracts. In addition to the specific requirements set out above, candidates for these volunteer assignments will be subject to background checks, confirmation and clearance provided by the United Nations Department for Safety and Security (UNDSS). Candidates who do not pass this security clearance are prohibited from serving as a UN Volunteer for UNWOMEN in Tanzania. UN Community Volunteers are expected to be recruited locally and work within their communities. For this specific assignment, if the selected UN Community Volunteer is required to travel or attend specific events, travel and daily meal expenses will be covered by the host entity. Upon successful completion of the assignment, UN Community Volunteers will receive a UNV Certificate of Service.
