The outcome of the service
In order to accomplish the Branch goals and meet the broader UNEP goals, the applicant will be in charge of advocacy, partnerships, and outreach for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs and UNEP initiatives under SDG 14. While remaining connected and conveying a consistent message, advocacy and resource mobilization methods must be directed at the right audiences, including member states, philanthropies, community organizations, decision makers, and implementing partners.
Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UN Environment Programme’s Ecosystems Division supports countries in conserving, restoring and sustainably managing their terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems, the biodiversity they contain and the products and services they provide for human well-being and prosperity. UNEP’s new Medium-Term Strategy (MTS) requires the organization to prioritize and program its funding for maximum impact around three interrelated areas of work: combating nature and biodiversity loss, addressing climate change, and dealing with the causes and impacts of pollution, the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the Paris Agreement, other internationally agreed goals and targets of the United Nations, including United Nations Environment Assembly, and national and regional MEAs, including Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans (RSCAPs). The Marine and Coastal Ecosystems Unit (MCEU) works to meet the MTS, GBF, BBNJ, and SIDS through key partnerships with GFCR, UNDP, UNCDF, UN-Oceans, UN DESA, FAO, IMO, and IOC UNESCO. The Unit also works with collaborating centers such as GRID ARENDAL, GRID Geneva, and UNEP WCMC. Roles & Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Marine and Freshwater Branch’s Strategic Communications and Global Engagement Expert, and overall guidance of Chief, Marine and Coastal Ecosystem Unit, the consultant will perform the following duties: • Partnership Development and Portfolio Advocacy o Lead development and implementation of event engagement strategies, including prioritization, objective-setting, and session design within global forums. Develop key event engagement and outcome messages, talking points, source vendors, create an event visual environment, and ensure timely event related mail-outs. o Enable spotlight and opportunities for ‘coral reef champions’ and key opinion leaders, as well as influential third-party opportunities, to drive visibility and credibility for the GFCR through events, social media, press, etc. o Lead input to design and provide content for GFCR 2025 Action Report. Guide colleagues, vendors and partners on design corrections. • Digital Advocacy and Content Delivery: o Ensure consistent digital advocacy strategy implementation across web, social media, and products enabling effective communications with donors, partners, internal GFCR stakeholders via the appropriate public facing communication channels. Maintain updates to GFCR website and other social media channels (LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube, etc.) o In coordination with the UN Global Team, lead drafting of communication materials based on brand guidelines (press releases, brochures/flyers, feature stories, factsheets, blogs, video scripts) for targeted audiences (donors, governments, NGOs, private sector) in a clear, attractive and audience specific manner. o Manage production and dissemination of GFCR newsletter, including content drafting and input coordination, submission processes, track newsletter performance and ensure steady and quality increase in GFCR target audience. • Increased Recognition, Branding Consistency & Priority Alignment: o Compile media coverage press packages for projects as deemed necessary; arrange media briefings and respond effectively to inquiries to media as well as public information materials. o Lead compilation and publishing of GFCR stories, articles and other publishable content providing overviews of human-interest content, blended finance examples, case studies and other thematic priorities. o Liaise with and coordinate communications activities with other communications focal points within the GFCR Coalition, including Convening Agents, as well as with UN Global Team colleagues. Provide input to design and priorities of regional and country implementing partner communications plans and deliverables. o Guide the design and branding work of UN Global Team and Coalition members and support staff related to all communication and creative products such as web design, films, knowledge products, infographics, publication design, etc.
Qualifications
An Advanced University Degree in one of the following disciplines Environmental Science, Data Science/Analytics, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Mathematics, and Economics. A first university degree with a combination of two years of professional and academic qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree. Masters of Science in environmental-related topic required. At least 7 years of experience in environment related communication and outreach is required Experience in partnership building and maintenance is required; Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams, including local and expatriate technical experts is desired Demonstrated experience in project development, implementation and management is an asset; Strong knowledge of website development and promotion
Languages
a) English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. b) Working knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
