The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund was established in 1949 by the United Nations General Assembly to provide retirement, death, disability, and related benefits for staff of the United Nations and other member organizations of the Fund. The Pension Fund pays benefits in 17 currencies to more than 80,000 beneficiaries who reside in 190 countries, and services more than 140,000 participants who work in the 24 member organizations of the Pension Fund. The Fund has offices in New York (United States) and Geneva (Switzerland) and two liaison offices in Nairobi (Kenya) and Bangkok (Thailand), respectively. The United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund-Pension Administration (UNJSPF-PA) comprises about 250 staff from diverse countries and cultures, based across four prominent duty stations (New York, Geneva, Bangkok, and Nairobi). This position is located the Payments Section of the Financial Services within the Pension Administration of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The incumbent reports to the Chief of Unit under the general supervision by the Chief of Section. The Payments Section manages monthly payroll for the UNJSPF periodic benefits, updates cost-of-living adjustments and administers returned payments and Accounts Payable.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority Associate Accountants will be responsible for the following duties: • Reviews, approves, reconciles and processes pension payments to the Fund’s retirees and beneficiaries on a regular and recurring basis. • Confirms that pension benefit expenses are in accordance with the Regulations and Rules of the Fund. • Reviews pension payments during the year and prepares annual Statement of Benefits as required. • Responsible for the issuance of pension payments, to ensure compliance with the Fund’s Regulations and Rules. • Assists with the preparation of cost-of-living update on a quarterly basis. • Reviews and consolidates a weekly payment report with a view to identifying anomalies and unusual trends. Initiates corrective action. • Assists in the review of historical cost of living records. • Assists in the preparation of year-end financial statements. • Assists in ensuring that accurate and complete accounting, reporting and internal control systems are functioning and that all relevant records are maintained. • Plans and works with the IT team, in the installation and administration of IT systems. • Researches and analyses information needed to respond to audit findings. • Supervises staff as required. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
A first-level university degree in business administration, finance, accounting or related field. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Chartered Accountant (CA) or equivalent is desirable.

Work Experience
A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, finance, budget, administration is required. Experience in pension-related fields is desirable. Experience in SWIFT, ACH, Fedwire or related multi-currency payment systems is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is an advantage.
