Under Resolution 2677 (2023), the Security Council determined that the situation in South Sudan continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security in the region.

The Council extended the UNMISS mandate until 15 March 2024. It also emphasized that the Mission should continue advancing its three-year strategic vision defined in resolution 2567 (2021) to prevent a return to civil war, build durable peace and support inclusive, accountable governance as well as free, fair and peaceful elections in accordance with the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

Under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, UNMISS is therefore authorized to use all necessary means to implement its mandate which includes:

(a) Protection of civilians
(b) Creating conditions conducive to the delivery of humanitarian assistance
(c) Supporting the Implementation of the Revitalised Agreement and the Peace Process
(d) Monitoring, investigating, and reporting on violations of humanitarian and human rights law

The overall ceiling for uniformed personnel is maintained at 17,000 troops and 2,101 police, including 88 corrections officers.

The position of information Analyst is in the Field Integrated Operations Centre (FIOC), which is under the overall supervision of the head of office and is mandated to support and facilitate the head of office. The FIOC is comprised of civilian, military and police personnel with a civilian team leader. The core functions of FIOC are situational awareness (including reporting), operational coordination and crisis management.

1. Maintain situational awareness, to inform mission leadership decision making and mandate implementation. This is done through:

• Collecting, triangulating, verifying and analyzing information.
• Drafting daily situation reports (DSRs), weekly reports, incident reports and other ad-hoc reports as may be required.
• Analysis of political and security developments/trends and patterns in AOR for early warning.
• Responding to requests for information (RFIs) from JOC/JMAC.
• Uploading and storing information in designated data bases including SAGE.

2. Contingency planning and crisis management:

• Ensure that all SOPs and Contingency plans related to crisis management and response are properly stored and regularly updated
• Support secretariate function of FIOC in Field Crisis Management Team (FCMT) meetings
• Basing on early warning reports, situation, and developments in AOR, support conduct of Tabletop (TTX) and Field Training
exercises (FTX).
