JOB DESCRIPTION

Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The Associate Political Affairs Officer reports to the Political Affairs Team Leader of the Domestic Politics Portfolio.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties: • Gathers, selects and analyses information on relevant, political, socio-economic and security developments from different sources. • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general and in particular, as they affect the local political dynamics and mandate implementation. • Keeps abreast of the latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to the Political Affairs Team Leader and senior officials; • Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to the Political Affairs Team Leader and senior officials; • Interacts regularly with the de facto authorities, elders, community leaders and members, civil society, women, youth and the business community to advance UNAMA’s engagement. • Drafts inputs, reports, briefing notes and other analytical products assigned by the Political Affairs Team Leader. • Prepares meetings of the Chief of the Political Affairs Service and senior staff with Afghan interlocutors. • Contributes to the collection and analysis of data and identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driver planning, decision making, presentation and reporting. • Documents requirements and background information used for data analysis. • Performs other related duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Masters degree or equivalent) OR first-level university degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in Political Science, Management or Development, or a related field.
Job – Specific Qualification
Professional training in the areas of planning, monitoring and evaluation, facilitation and/or coordination is desirable.
Work Experience
As per approved special measure, with relevant masters degree or higher a minimum of one (1) year of progressively responsible experience and with relevant first-level/bachelors degree a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice and reporting is required. Experience in liaising with actors across the entire political spectrum, ulema and civil society is desirable. Experience working in an international organization or a non-governmental organization is desirable. Experience in using SAGE or comparable data management system is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English and Dari is required. Knowledge of Pashto is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise, which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
