Mission and objectives

In accordance with the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF), the Resident Coordinator’s Office assists the UN Resident Coordinator in carrying out their duties and organizes the UN Country Team’s interactions with the government.

The medium-term results framework, UNDAF 2018–2022, which outlines the UN system’s response to national development priorities, is presently being implemented in Kenya. Based on a shared national analysis and the UN competitive advantage, UNDAF outlines the ways in which the UN country team will help accomplish development outcomes.

The United Nations country team in Kenya is being led and strategically positioned by the Resident Coordinator to address the government’s current goals, primarily the Big Four Agenda, Medium-Term Plan III, and Kenya’s Vision 2030. There are five

Context

In order to fulfill its vital mission of strengthening the coherence of the UN System in Kenya, UN Kenya is seeking a driven Communication & Coordination Assistant-UNV to join the dynamic RCO team full-time. The UN RCO Intern will help carry out the services in the UN RCO under the general direction of the Head of RCO, the direct supervision of the Communications, Advocacy, and Coordination Officer, and in close collaboration with the UN Agencies.

The assignment’s goal is to expose students and recent graduates from a variety of academic disciplines to sustainable development concerns and give them a firsthand look at the UN Development System’s daily operations in Kenya. It is anticipated that the assignment will begin in January 2025 and run for six months. The internship is full-time and unpaid. The internship will give the chosen candidate a rare chance to collaborate closely with team members and get insight into the workings of the UN system at the national level, all under the supervision of the Communications, Advocacy, and Coordination Officer. The intern will, among other things, actively participate in UN advocacy and communication campaigns; gain practical experience with a range of UN communications materials, including documents, videos, and articles; and gain knowledge of the roles

Task description

Under direct supervision, the UN University Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
•Support the development of a weekly social media calendar and draft posts for UN Kenya social media platforms.
•Assist the RCO staff in gathering results relevant to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2022-2026.
•Participate in updating and providing inputs to UN Kenya website and other communications productions, including creating and editing videos, articles, and social media posts.
•Support the development, translation, and editing of communications materials, including op-eds, website content, press releases, social media posts, speeches, and other media/social media articles in English and Kiswahili.
•Facilitate on-site communications activity set-up, including video recording, press conferences, photography, etc.
•Support team members in coordinating inter-agency and high-level meetings or events organized through the UN Communications Group.
•Support the production of graphic design of brochures, presentations and other documentation.
•Assist in preparing briefing material, key strategic points and background information prior to UN RC meetings
•Support RCO in organizing strategic high-level events on coordination

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
•Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for in-stance in events that mark International Volunteer Day).
•Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
•Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities.
•Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
•Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers.
•Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
