Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority with a mandate to set the global environmental agenda, promote the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serve as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP coordinates the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners to provide technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy and to strengthen the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This internship is located in UNEP/Ecosystems Division/Regional Seas Branch/Abidjan Convention. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer and the overall supervision of the Senior Coordinator Officer, the incumbent will: • Have the opportunity of learning and working in a very dynamic environment. • Contribute to in-person/virtual activities, including Webinars and online meetings. • Assist with key clients to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions. • Carry out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, etc., to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources. • Assist in providing substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies. • Assist in performing consulting assignments, in collaboration with the client, by planning facilitating workshops, through other interactive sessions and assisting in developing the action plan the client will use to manage the change. • Assist with design of data collection tools; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions. • Assist in the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc. • Provide administrative and substantive support to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposed participants, preparation of background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc. • Assist in outreach activities; participates in the development of training workshops, seminars, etc.; participates in and makes presentations on assigned topics/activities. • Participate in field missions, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection, etc. • Assist in coordinating activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports, financial statements, etc.) and preparation of related documents/reports (pledging, work programme, programme budget, etc.). • Provide assistance on administrative tasks (e.g., formatting spreadsheets, proofreading text documents, searching archives, running basic reports, etc.) • Perform other duties as necessary.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: • Are enrolled in a master’s or in a Ph.D. programme; or • Are enrolled in the final year of a bachelor’s programme; or • Are within one year after graduation from a Bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. programme. in the field of communications, public relations, languages, Information Technology, Graphic Design, or equivalent. In addition: • Demonstrate pleasant interpersonal skills. • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and has a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Previous work experience is not required, however experience in the field of communications and public relations and experience working with the production of communication products is desirable. Academic qualification on environment, natural resources management or related area is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. For the post advertised, knowledge and fluency in English and French required. NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
