With more than 20 years of experience in the country, UNOPS Afghanistan focuses on providing maximum support to the people of Afghanistan through the delivery of projects and services that improve the lives of people in need. The UNOPS Afghanistan Country Office (AFCO) serves as an organizational mechanism to deliver a range of projects for which UNOPS has been designated as the implementation agency. At present, UNOPS AFCO activities cover a range of sectors including humanitarian, basic human needs, cash for work, infrastructure, development, procurement and HR services.
The functional objective of UNOPS AFCO is to contribute to improving the lives of girls, boys, men and women living in Afghanistan. The aim of UNOPS AFCO is to provide efficient and cost-effective implementation services on behalf of all our partners to support the humanitarian response and development of the country. UNOPS AFCO’s mission is to exceed the expectations of all stakeholders in the delivery of AFCO services, at all times, in all places, in all circumstances, in order to improve the lives of Afghans in need.
Responding to one of the most complex humanitarian crises in the world, the Afghanistan Inter-Agency Information and Accountability Center (IAIAC) known as Awaaz Afghanistan, is an inter-agency two-way communication and accountability mechanism that responds to the information and communication needs of affected populations in Afghanistan and allows affected populations to shape their relief and recovery. Based in Kabul and functioning as a toll-free humanitarian helpline, Awaaz Afghanistan is a link to the partnership between those who wish to assist and those who need assistance and is accountable to both constituencies.
Supported by the Humanitarian Country Team, with current funding from the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund (AHF), UN Women, Japan Supplementary Fund, and the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO), Awaaz’s primary objective is to promote two-way communication between affected populations to:
- Empower communities through the provision of accessible and timely information on how to access humanitarian services and resources required to improve their situation
- Help ensure efficient and effective coordination of humanitarian actors operating in Afghanistan by collecting and circulating information about the urgent needs and priorities of affected populations

- Establishing an easy-to-access and safe mechanism through which affected populations can lodge feedback and complaints
- Channeling feedback and complaints to humanitarian actors to influence humanitarian programming and shape quality advocacy

Purpose and Scope of the Assignment
Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the Social Media Associate will support Awaaz in enhancing its digital presence and engagement across platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, and YouTube. The incumbent will create and manage posts, support multimedia production, and ensure consistent branding in line with UNOPS guidelines. The role involves real-time event coverage, promotion of impact stories, coordination with internal and external stakeholders, and performance monitoring using analytics tools to optimize outreach and engagement. Content will primarily be produced in English, with some materials in local languages as needed.
The Social Media Associate will support Awaaz/UNOPS in managing its official digital communication channels, including planning, content development, publishing, monitoring, and reporting. The role will contribute to building awareness, promoting key messages, highlighting impact, and fostering meaningful engagement with communities and partners.
Content Planning & Creation
- Support the development of a structured social media content calendar aligned with Awaaz/UNOPS key messaging, events, and global observances.
- Draft, edit, and schedule content (text, graphics, videos) across social media platforms, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and alignment with brand guidelines.
- Translate key messages and technical content into engaging and accessible social media language for diverse audiences.
- Coordinate with internal teams to gather updates, photos, or stories for content development.
- Assist in producing simple graphics using design tools (e.g., Canva) and editing short video clips for digital use.
Platform Management & Engagement
- Manage day-to-day posting and monitoring of UNOPS/Awaaz’s official social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, YouTube).
- Respond to comments and inquiries from the public on social platforms in a timely and professional manner.
- Escalate sensitive or complex queries to appropriate focal points or teams.
- Monitor and flag misinformation or inappropriate comments for review or removal.
- Support cross-posting and amplification of partner content, ensuring alignment with the communication strategy.
Campaigns & Events
- Assist in planning and delivering social media campaigns for events, awareness days, and project milestones.
- Coordinate real-time content collection and posting during key events, including live-tweeting or on-site social coverage.
- Capture and curate user-generated content or testimonials (with consent) for storytelling purposes.
- Draft social media toolkits or pre-approved content packages for partners to use during campaigns.
Monitoring & Analytics
- Track and compile weekly and monthly performance metrics (reach, engagement, followers, impressions) using tools like Meta Insights, LinkedIn Analytics, and Google Analytics.
- Analyze trends and performance to identify opportunities for improved engagement or reach.
- Prepare short analytical briefs or visual dashboards for internal use or reporting to donors/stakeholders.
Quality Assurance & Coordination
- Ensure all content follows UNOPS/Awaaz branding, spelling, grammar, and tone of voice standards.
- Maintain a database of high-performing content, campaign reports, and lessons learned for reference and internal learning.
- Participate in regular team meetings and strategy discussions, contribute insights, feedback, and creative suggestions to strengthen Awaaz’s digital presence.
- Completion of secondary education with a minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
- A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Media Arts, Marketing, International Relations, Political Science, or other related disciplines is desired.
Experience:
- 5 years of relevant work experience with a secondary degree in social media and digital marketing, with demonstrated responsibility for creating, curating, and executing high-impact campaigns across diverse digital and social media platforms, or a minimum of one year of experience with bachelor degree.
- Proven experience in managing social media strategies for major events, with a track record of generating significant audience reach and engagement.
- Strong understanding of key social media platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, X/Twitter, etc.), including their respective audiences and effective usage in various contexts.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.
- Experience in photography is desirable.
- Prior experience in the humanitarian and/or development sector is an asset.
- Proficient in using digital tools and platforms relevant to social media management and content creation.
- Familiarity with the Google Workspace (Drive, Calendar, Gmail, Sheets, Docs, Slides) is preferred.
- Experience using Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) is preferred.
- Fluency (oral and written) in English is required.
- Fluency in Pashto or Dari language is highly desired.

Terms and Conditions
