Duties and Responsibilities
Org. Setting and Reporting The UN Secretary-General launched on 1 January 2019 a bold and new global reform which repositioned the UN Development System to deliver more effectively and efficiently with the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this reform, UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), under the leadership of an empowered and independent UN Resident Coordinator – the highest-ranking official of the UN Development System and Representative of the UN Secretary-General at country level – support countries in the achievement of their development priorities and the attainment of the SDGs. This position is located in the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Monrovia, Liberia. The incumbent reports administratively to the Team Leader. The Communications intern will report to the Communications and Advocacy Officer. The intern will work under the primary supervision of the Communications and Advocacy Officer. Responsibilities 1.1 The overall scope of the assignment is to provide communications support to the RCO Communications Officer and RCO team including but not limited to social media, visibility and public relations, etc. 1.2 Where relevant assist the UNCG in ensuring that its communications including news releases, statements, social media tools, op-eds as well as internal communications are aligned to support the UN’s Joint Communications & Advocacy Strategy Support the Communications Officer in media engagement including media monitoring; developing a database of media contacts in Liberia; support media and news daily summaries. Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Currently enrolled in or have completed a bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Journalism, Communications, Arts, Information Communications Technology, International Relations, or other related fields, The Intern should be below 28 years and must be a Liberian National residing in Liberia with the following qualifications. Skills and competencies: • Must demonstrable skills in analytical thinking, communication, and research, • Must have written and spoken proficiency, as well as good writing and editing skills in English, • Required to be proficient in computer skills and having a knowledge of automated systems, • Must have strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work under pressure within an international setting, • Required to have the ability to adapt to new environments and to establish and maintain good working relations with individuals of different cultural backgrounds, Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme.
