Mission and objectives
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations for agriculture (including crops, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture, forestry and natural resources) and food. FAO was established in 1945 with the mandate to improve nutrition, increase agricultural productivity, raise the standard of living in rural populations, contribute to global economic growth and ensure humanity’s freedom from hunger. As an intergovernmental organization comprised of 194 member countries and two associate members (Faroe Islands and Tokelau) and one member organization, the European Union, FAO provides technical assistance to governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, to fight against animal and crop pests and diseases, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner for the purpose of achieving food security and reducing hunger and malnutrition. In humanitarian emergencies, FAO role is to save livelihoods, protect and rehabilitate the agricultural production system and promote self-reliance, moving crisis-affected communities away from food aid dependence and paving the way for an early exit from humanitarian assistance. FAO’s work in Bangladesh is guided by the Country Programming Framework (CPF), which defines the technical cooperation priorities of the partnership between FAO and the Government of Bangladesh. The current CPF which sets out FAO’s strategic priorities, key areas of technical cooperation, and medium-term programming activities for 2022-2026 is structured around four pillars: 1. Productive, diversified, sustainable and inclusive agroeconomic growth. 2. Healthy, safe, and nutritious food for all. 3. Climate resilience and nature-based, low-carbon sustainable development. 4. Gender equality and youth development.
