Job Summary

Perform counselling and/or education sessions to patients, following different medical and mental health MSF protocols and procedures, in order to improve their psychosocial condition.

Duties & Responsibilities

·     Identify the psychosocial, socio-economic and administrative needs for patients

·     Actively promote the availability of counselling services and carry out, individual or in group counselling, basic psycho educational sessions, to patients, their families (when needed), in order to alleviate their psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.

·     Refer patients to other specialists or other institutions for further assistance, when necessary, in order to propose the best support available.

·     Participate in the creation of any material needed for counselling activities and look after it,

·     Keep files and statistics of daily activities and participate in team meetings to share experiences and discuss special cases with other counsellors, preserving confidentiality

·     Inform line manager of any problem of any kind arising during the day-to-day activities.

·     Take active part in trainings, supervisions/intervisions and support the activities manager when necessary in doing sensitization for MSF staff or external partners about mental health /psychosocial issues.

·     Discuss difficulties and problems in counselling with supervisor.

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

·     Actively raise awareness; Perform context-based sensitisation and psychoeducation in and promoting the availability of MHPSS services in the MSF service areas (Neonatology, Neonatal intensive care unit, Prematurity ward, paediatric intensive care unit and the mothers resting areas)

·     Provide PFA and other psychosocial supports to the target population refer where necessary.

·     Participate in the development of locally adapted psycho-stimulation materials (Whenever needed) and other communication materials that could facilitate a good treatment outcome of children.

·     Actively promote the services among the medical staff in the department to ensure that patients in need of MHPSS services are referred to the Mental Health team.

·     Provide basic counselling support for mild to moderate cases individually or in groups in a safe and confidential environment.

·     Ensure privacy and confidentiality of patients by holding private conversations in a safe space and keep files coded where no one has access except the people in charge

·     Respect the line of communication in addressing needs within the project

·     Complete all the necessary documents (clinical file and group session files and ensure daily; data entry in HMIS

·     Daily updating of the name and code register

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements and Competencies

Education Counseling, social work, psychology or other similar degree/diploma.

Experience 1 year experience essential. Experience with NGO desirable.

Languages English desirable; Local Working Language Essential

Knowledge Desirable computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
