The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UN Environment’s mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The primary purpose of the Digital and Emerging Technology Specialist is to support ESS develop and deploy innovative tools to automate UNEP’s business process and enhanced overall organization efficiency as part of digital transformation strategy. The incumbent will also facilitate ESS’s digital engagement with clients and various stockholders, including but not limited to, internal UNEP divisions, United Nations agencies, technologies partners, and service providers
Task description
This position is in UNEP’s Corporate Services Division, Enterprise Solutions Section (ESS) at the Nairobi duty station. The Digital and Emerging Technology Specialist will report to DevOps and security team lead, with overall supervision by the Chief Enterprise Solutions Section, and will undertake l undertake the following activities: · Participate as a team member in business automation initiatives to streamline work processes using platforms such as PowerApps, flows, and Jira. · Develop detailed system schemas, data dictionaries, functional specifications, and user documentation. · Gather and document users’ requirements and translate these into innovative digital applications; determine application systems integration and linkage issues. · Work as a team member of developers, particularly in implementing Low-Code/NoCode PowerApps solutions, AI Bots, PHP, and related back-end MySQL and MS SQL databases. · Maintain, upgrade, or enhance existing systems; troubleshoot and provide continuing user support. · Drafts correspondence and communications, including technical support communication and other related issues; coordinates with service providers as required and maintains and supports a portfolio of applications. · Keeps abreast of developments in the relevant field of technologies; conducts research on new frontier technologies and assess their implementation feasibility. · In undertaking these duties, the Junior Statistical Analyst will establish and maintain relationships to support collaboration with data, statistical, scientific, and other specialists/analysts, as well as technical staff across UNEP and in UN. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: · Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day). · Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country. · Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities. · Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publica-tions/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc. · Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers. · Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
