Job Description:

ABOUT THE JOB

Overall purpose of the role: DRC’s Economic Recovery aims to improve rural livelihoods and resilience of target groups, including men, women, boys, girls, youth, and persons with disabilities. DRC is seeking EcRec. Officer (Veterinary) for Nuristan Sub-Office to support the team in implementing EU founded grant activities. The project aims to Livelihood Improvement through Inclusive Food Security (LIFE). Climate change-induced disasters and hazards are already a lived reality for rural Afghans; therefore, the project aims to build their resilience through activities that enable them to better prepare for, adapt and respond to these disasters and hazards, primarily to flood and drought. The EcRec. Officer (Veterinary) will be responsible for supporting the planning, managing, and reporting of veterinary components for the project. The position holder will work closely with the EcRec Team Leader & manager, and field officers and target groups to design and implement veterinary interventions.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure effective on time implementation of approved and planned technical support activities, extension services and strategies at the target project area.
  • Conduct mobilization meetings with livestock farmers and establish livestock development groups (community level groups) and livestock associations.
  • Establish improved fodder demonstration trials on farmer’s field and work for further extension.
  • Conduct cattle health camps, vaccination camps etc in close coordination with public and private line agencies.
  • Introduce the improved high yielding milk breeds of cattle, with increased resistance against the diseases.
  • Provide veterinary services at the Veterinary Clinic to all livestock farming communities including possible outbreaks of seasonal diseases, its prevention measures, identification of disease, treatment and control of disease.
  • Organize awareness raising camps, workshops, training and meetings with the local community to increase their knowledge and understanding on improved livestock rearing, farming and management.
  • Implement technical activities which include partnering with public line agencies, local service providers (agriculturists, para-vets and VFUs and other key actors to provide capacity building trainings to smallholder farmers, local farmer groups, local cooperatives, collection centers and private sector milk processing firms to ensure increased milk production, productivity, quality and prices benefiting smallholder dairy farmers.
  • Submit field visit reports, monthly, quarterly project review reports, and technical progress reports as required by the project
  • Conduct participatory assessments and surveys to identify livestock-related needs and opportunities within target communities.
  • Promote best practices in livestock husbandry, including improved animal handling, hygiene, and market linkages for livestock products.
  • Participate in technical meetings conducted by the project/ DAIL, district authorities, and CDC & provide reports to the project manager as well as team leader.

Perform any other tasks as assigned by the project manager & team leader

Job Requirements:

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in this role you must have:

Experience and technical competencies: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary science, Animal Science or Livestock Development, Animal Health, Dairy Science/Technology or related field with 04 years of experience in similar capacity.
  • Professional Skills, Competencies: Proven experience, skills and knowledge and preferred experience on managing veterinary clinic as veterinary doctor, dairy management, animal health care, feed/fodder management.
  • Proven skills and experience in planning, implementation monitoring, budgeting and reporting.
  • Working experiences with public set-up and other relevant organizations, strong communication, networking and liaison
  • Fluency in English and local languages in speaking and writing.
  • Committed ability to provide technical supervision, motivate and train project staff and farmers.
  • Willingness and enthusiasm for working with rural and vulnerable communities living in remote areas of the country.
  • Solid computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and report writing ability.

Education/qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary science, Animal Science or Livestock Development, Animal Health.

Languages:

  • Pashto, Dari (desirable)
  • English (good command)
